A brilliant reward for the last three months. Fully deserved.

Lots of media coverage for Fran Jones recently but Liam has been making similar progress largely under the radar.

He's a Broady...and older than Fran + Fran has the disability factor.

Liams turn around is a big success story though for us tennis fans, whether the media recognise it. Two years ago in the predictions competition, Id written him off and said he should retire. I remember saying it. Hes somehow got his game and head together, Id love to know how - is it a different coach or just a different mental attitude ? Whatever, its working and good luck to him!

Yes, big difference in age. Fran's only 20. Liam's 27. And certainly Fran's story makes good press.

Liam should be in his prime now, statistically, this should be his peak moment. So it's great to see he's doing well (and given the normal variation, let's hope his peak is age 29 or 30)

I don't think he's changed coach. However, he did state publicly that he'd battled with various mental health issues in recent years and, if he's managed to get those under control, then it makes sense that he's doing better now. (Think he had girlfriend issues too, although so do lots of people and I don't really follow that side). He certainly seems happier now though and that's wonderful.

Travel and relationships is such an interesting and personal one though and can really impact your work. In sport, players like Marcus Trescothick suffer from real anxiety issues and the travel was something he couldnt cope with and it really impact his England career. I know from my own experience that I really hate travelling these days, not holidays, but being away from home for a prolonged period I can manage a week but any longer and I really do struggle with missing home and mild depression. A long road trip like the tennis players and I would really have problems and it would impact my work, very quickly, in terms of concentration.

Add to that relationship issues when away from home - I can imagine how worrying about a situation, wanting to be with or talk to that person, wondering what they are thinking and doing etc, looking forward to a phone call or video call and then that not being like you hoped, maybe arguing via whatsapp or whatever, can leave you drained and not at all focused and much much more. And that in turn must impact on your playing, I am sure it must.

Judging by social media he does seem to be quite popular among the other British players (with the possible exception of Jo Konta).

Whats the Liam and a Jo Konta gripe?

Ive heard that Jo isnt popular with a few of the players having said that, quite mardy on occasion. Liams always seemed a nice lad, has a great attitude, decent morals and political view in life. The latter tend to go hand in hand I feel.

I suspect that this refers to the incident at the BOTBs where Liam wheeled out a cardboard cutout of Jo when she didn't appear at the awards ceremony.  However I saw that Liam subsequently said he hadn't meant any offence and he intended to speak to Dan Smethurst to try and put things right.  I think this may well have blown over by now.

It's been a weird match! Norrie was 6-1 and a break up, then found himself a double break down in the third set. Now 5-5 in the third set...

L96:  Cameron Norrie WR 56 defeated Yoshihito Nishioka (JPN) WR 66 by 6-1 3-6 7-5

How on earth did he manage to turn that one round?  The Japanese served for it at 5-2 in the third!

*****

L64:  (9) Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) WR 16 (CH = 3 in November 2017) vs Cameron Norrie WR 56

phew, I had completely lost sight of this match but great to see him win!! I actually thought Nishioka was a slight favourite despite the rankings, he is quite a tough cookie, but Cam out toughed him it seems!
