I think of part of Dan's recent issues has been the lack of spectators, Novak dicking around making him wait probably went some way to compensating for that. Dan has mentioned how much he hated the itf lower circuit with no one watching.

Yes, I agree. Both Gilles Simon and Tsonga have said they've no real interest playing at the moment, to empty stadiums, that the crowd was an essential part of the enjoyment of the sport. They're a bit older, and richer, and can afford to step back. But it's not easy and Dan certainly likes a crowd.

Paire is another one who really dislikes the lack of crowd. But he has a terrible attitude that his fellow countrymen do not.

Absolutely.

Although he is also battling quite marked mental health issues.

Stu Fraser's report in today's Times for anyone with a subscription.  Headline:  "Dan Evans stuns Novak Djokovic in Monte Carlo to record greatest victory of his career"; opening paragraph:

The spark for the finest win of Dan Evans's career came in the locker room of the Monte Carlo Country Club. Kept waiting unnecessarily by Novak Djokovic before walking out for their third-round match yesterday, the British No 1 could feel his competitive juices being stirred.  "It was a little annoying," Evans, 30, said afterwards. "That got me a little extra fired up."

Pity Fraser had to spoil it by dragging in a reference to Dan's suspension for cocaine use four years ago.  There are some unedifying & ill-informed remarks in the Comments section, too, not to mention a number which have been deleted!

Tsitsipas got a walkover after a close first set and is through. Dan should be starting pretty soon.

Needs to find a first serve and getting beaten at the back of the court- about the limit of my knowledge

Dam is way back. A good metre further behind his line than David. And that's coz goffin has forced him there. And so David's angles are killing Dan.
Dan started well, and bar his first serve, has played about the same.
But goffin has really come in, and been the driver of the rally

Dans got the break second set, 3-1. As has Liam in Belgrade in the final set.

Some real fun points, as Dan tries to be a bit more dominant and take control.
David played a loose game to get broken.
But then some great play by Dan.
It's very close....

Lovely to see our babies grow up :)

Dan got shortchanged on a serve that hit the line (probably) and the umpire looked at the wrong mark (definitely)

Impirtant point.

Dan seriously cross.

But after an outburst, managed to get back to playing tennis.

David now trying to take the initiative again.

Third set is going to be a fight

Dan does it, 6-4 in the 3rd!

Extraordinary!  I'm pretty sure this is his biggest ever points haul.  Clay court wins must be like buses!
