You could see Anton just stopped believing when he pushed the backhand long on break point at 3-4*. The way he went to the ground after it, in disappointment and exhaustion, sent a pretty clear signal he felt his final chance had gone.
He should be incredibly proud of his week, and his performance today. An exceptional effort and hopefully he can use how much this stings as the best possible motivation to never feel like it again!
Heartbreaking for Anton but what a match. This experience will help him so much, not just because it was five sets or Wimbledon but he'll learn a lot from playing such a quality opponent who got every ball back and a few more. Big lessons, great week. All positive.
Honestly, sad with the loss but so many positives from Anton! He has some great weapons, he has the game and is a fighter / fully invested. Needs to work on keeping his emotions in check / playing smarter but I think this will all come with more experience.
Ultimately a great grass court season and has beaten some far higher ranked players along with a great fight in the FQR. I also really liked how he commended his opponent on several great play moments - really nice to see!
What a fantastic match. He certainly did us all proud today and such a pity he couldn't quite get over the line. Hope he'll play some Challenger tournaments over the summer and get his ranking up a bit more.
Anton looks set to have a great career if he can play the big points with better consistency and cut out some of the errors that young players often have. But he looks like a great prospect though...
