RE: Weeks 26 & 27 - The Championships, Wimbledon, London (grass) - mixed doubles

In case anybody missed it, the female commentator (I think it was Sam Smith) said that she'd bumped into Joe's mum & asked her about the change in partnership (Harriet for Desirae).  Mrs Salisbury said in reply that Harriet had texted Joe eight weeks earlier, i.e. before R-G, to ask him about the Wimbledon mixed, he'd said yes & he was a man of his word (unlike some we could name!).

Turning out to be quite a tournament for Harriet and Joe. With the possibility of a further £25k each if they win the final, Harriet has won £88k (25+15+48) and Joe £85k (25+60)

And lets not forget , Neal Skupski has a semifinal tomorrow, paired up with Desirae Krawczyk of course - which would be very apt if they could make it through !

The Beeb's coverage starts at 11.00 on BBC2 tomorrow.  I asssume that BBC1 (coverage starting at 13.00) will concentrate on the women's final, so I imagine that Neal's & Desirae's mixed SF (starting NB 14.00) will be covered on 2 once the first boys' singles SF, which kicks off play N° 1, has been completed.

Poor Jay, I wonder if he has been pretty much ostracised bt the women since then. Laura Robson eluded to the Jay/Harriet thing being worse than was reported.   Anyway no sympathy for him and Harriet has gone on to bigger and better things.

ETA Also don't get the hate for mixed on here, it's a lot of fun and there can be some great tennis on show.  It's really disappointing at Wimbledon to see so many empty seats during mixed matches as it's great entertainment, often better quality matches than the singles

I also enjoy mixed, wish it enjoyed a higher status in the game really (partly why I always kept mixed world rankings - glad to see Joe Will top those!) and actually wish theyd have had a year end mixed finals like the other genres of the game for the top pairs. Sadly will never happen.

Yes, not trying to rake up old coals, and it's in the past now, but I was wondering yesterday, watching the Joe/Harriet match, 'is Jay sitting at home, remembering good times, and thinking 'what if?'......'

The fact that he wasn't even in the mixed doubles - and with SO many gaps - that's surely a bit telling....

But love the fact that Harriet asked Joe. Go girl ! 21st century

And that she went for the top.

Coz if you're going to put yourself out there, and risk being turned down, you might as well aim high

Two questions - who will folks support if Neal plays Joe and Harriet in the final?

secondly, and Indy will hate this one. in tokyo which mixed pairings should we play out of combos available from Andy, Dan, Joe, Neal with Jo, Heather ?!

If the mens singles final tomorrow is long, the mixed final could clash with the England match. Which would be a massive disappointment and Im sure disappoint Joe, Harriet , Neal amongst them.

Lets hope Matteo downs Djoko as easily as we all expect !

Joe is a rather impressive 12-1 win loss in mixed , winning the French of course and semis in Australia. And now final here at least.

Alongside an Aussie Open mens doubles final and semis here , he has had a seriously impressive slam year.

I wonder how money hes won from the slams this year so far?!

Neal all on his own?!!!    He'd thoroughly deserve it it in that case! wink  Seriously, neither:  may the better team win, as far as I'm concerned.  Either way, we can't really lose, though it would be rather nice for Neal to have a taste of Grand Slam glory.  Then again, the same applies to Harriet...  I'm just going to sit back & enjoy it.  smile

If it were just Neal against Joe I wouldn't know who to support, but I couldn't not support Harriet for so many many reasons.  I have followed for years (like all the GB girls), but mostly I hope if she could get the win it might be the key to finally unleash her potential in singles.  Of course before that we still have to hope Neal gets to the final.

Regarding mixed pairing for the Olympics I would put Joe with Heather as I think they are the best two doubles players in the squad.  For the other pairing I guess it depends who wants to play?

And like the other posters here I love watching the Mixed doubles - always have because it's such fun and usually less stressful than watching singles.  I can remember watching John Lloyd and Wendy Turnbull (among others) with my Mum many years ago.  She loved watching Wimbledon and I always have lots of happy memories at this time of the year.

Agreed - mixed doubles is so entertaining.
If it's Brit v Brit, then hard to choose, but if it comes to it, I'd have to take 2 Brits over 1 Brit - sorry Neal.

Mixed needs its profile raised, Federer for mixed next year should do it.
Anyway Got to support Harriet and partner. Her and Joe teamed up for BotB last year and made a good partnership so I would imagine there was a brief wouldn't it be fun chat then. I do wish more women would play more doubles, Harriet was top 100 in doubles and really could've pushed on from there, but let it go. I think doubles is under utilised as a means to improving play. Emma could certainly use a bit more doubles to get her into the net more. It's nice to see Evan Hoyt enter doubles initially as a way to get some match practice after long term injury, again something other players might look at.

And Ali Collins appearing in doubles as, I assume, a way to ease back in too.

Doubles hasn't done any good to their singles for Freya and Emily Appleton, say.

But, like you, I think it's a good idea.

Not only for the doubles skills but, mentally, to have an occasion to actually enjoy competitive tennis, with less pressure, and more of a team spirit. It's easily lost in singles and it can really lift the spirits.
