Girls: 2021 Wimbledon (Week 27)

Ranah lost 7-6(2) 6-4 which is a creditable score against the 6th seed, who recently reached a 15K final. Matilda won the second set 6-3. Kylie lost the first set 6-2

Great effort from Ranah
Still two more years in juniors
And another shout out for the head of French Connection for being her sponsor, helping out the family, and making tennis possible for her

Said it before, but it does worry me slightly that whenever I watch her I see Hannah Collin 20 years on. She's got some great qualities but it's also clear why she is finding the transition to the seniors hard, she has to do so much work to win a point as it's all just a fraction too lightweight. She's got a lot a good team can work with though, and still some growing to do, so hopefully she can keep stepping up over the next 12-18 months.

Yes, I agree. And have always thought the same.

She plays a nice game, but - yes - has to work SO hard to win her points. She never goes into the net, to take the ball out of the air, to finish a point quicker. She loves her drop shot which isn't very good. She doesn't really have the depth and penetration on her ground shots to do real damage; they build a point but that's all. Overall, its a very good package but given her height and weight and current arm speed, it's hard to see how the point winning is going to get easier

What does Alicia play like? Never heard about her before, but strong run to the QF of a player that has never been in the junior top 300. Any one have any background on her and her potential?

She's a tall, slim girl with a big serve, and hard flat groundshots. Doesn't move particularly well. But has an ideal game for grass.

She's played quite a lot of British Tour events, I seem to remember.

Signed up for US college tennis in Florida, I believe, too, which is an excellent idea.

Don't really know much more.....

From Hove, same club and coaches as Sonay Kartal.

a few years back she was doing well at ITF. However, think she got injured and didnt play many events after that.

Really enjoyed that last set of Kylie's, even though she lost in the end.
Lovely to see the crowd getting SO into a juniors match.
Kylie looked quite bashful at times, with how they were cheering for her (I think the drink might have been flowing a bit - not at Kylie's end, you understand)

That looked a pretty good effort by Kylie against a physically strong Spaniard, who nearly beat Kiki Mladenovic in Madrid. Alicia follows Jack on court 3 against the top seed, so there will be the chance to compare her with Eva, though the Andorran may have played herself into the tournament with 2 hard-fought wins today

There is plenty about Alicia (and Jack) in the ITF feature article, which also answers the question posed earlier in the thread - it is the first time since 1983 that we have had 4 girls in the last 16

R3

(WC) Alicia Dudeney d. (SE) Linda Klimovicova (CZE) 6-4 6-4
Nastasja Mariana Schunk (GER) d. (13) Matilda Mutavdzic 6-0 3-6 6-2
(6) Kristina Dmitruk (WC) d. Ranah Akua Stoiber 7-6(2) 6-4
Ana Mintegi Del Olmo (ESP) d. (WC) Kylie Bilchev 6-3 4-6 6-3

QF

(1) Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva (AND) v (WC) Alicia Dudeney

Kylie and Mingge are of course in doubles (last 16?) still, so with Alicia and Jack PJ make up our juniors reps

Wow - Alicia has taken the first set off the number one seed.  I was getting rather irritated by Annabel Croft raving about her when at that point Alicia looked the better player!

Alicia has a nice backhand and grit, plus chucks in the odd slices for a nice mixture of rhythm. Forehand a bit less solid but sill can pack a punch. Serve seems very problematic, ball toss all over the place.

Overall impressive game. Definitely think the US college system will be great for her progress.

The no 1 seed went off court for quite a while between sets and was successful in breaking up Alicia's rhythm.
