Week 39 - ATP 250 - San Diego Open - San Diego, CA, USA (hard)

One thing that I think has happened is that Cam has caught Shapovalov in the live race.

live-tennis is showing them both on 1790 points in 14th and 15th place which I think is right. OER has Cam 10 points less but previously reliable OER has been rather sickly of late. Having initially seemingly been spooked by the uncertainties regarding old points it's simply often been getting things wrong lately - eg. still has Emma too high in the women's race by wrongly counting all events.

Good stuff. Yes the title would he very nice. He would get to just 7 points behind Dan in Monday's rankings if he did win the title though he does then have 160 points coming off over the IW fortnight.

Probably unlikely:

SF:  (1) Andrey Rublev (RUS) WR 5 (= CH) vs Cameron Norrie WR 28

I see that Casper Ruud had a rather easier time in his QF, beating Sonego WR 23 by 6-1 6-4.

Maybe just one other match but part of the picture that has Andy's last 2 conquerors Hurkacz and Ruud lieing #8 and #9 in this year's race, currently ATP tour finals qualifying positions, since #7 Nadal won't compete again this season, and they will both likely pass him anyway.

Andy indeed just looks like he needs that fresh breakthrough.

The shame is Andy is trying to push on at a time in the next few weeks when he will lose points. So realistically he will be lucky to come out of the next 4 weeks with an improved ranking , he may do but probably wont. Whether Australian Open direct entry other than a wild card is possible , we will see, but lets hope he at least gets a few wins to reward his form and keep his morale high.

Rublev won their only other encounter:  the quarter-finals in St Petersburg last year (2 & 1 - indoor hard).

Cam is Won 6 Lost 6 against top 20 players this year though the wins are mainly through winning all 5 of his matches vs 11-20 ( very good in itself ).

He is Won 1 Lost 6 against top 10 players with the one win being against Thiem, then WR 4, in his run to the Lyon final in May.

Cam levels at set all vs Rublev, saving 2 break back points in the last game and converting on his 4th SP in all ( 2 at 5-2* and 2 at *5-3 )

3-6 6-3
