Week 43 - ATP 500 - Erste Bank Open - Vienna, Austria (indoor hard)

I have edited my previous singles race update since I hadn't realised that Basilashvili still had to play Berrettini tonight. He lost.

By the way, I am quoting remaining contenders in line with the live-tennis site which appears to knock players out as soon as they are going to be more than 1000 points off the final place.

This suggests that the Stockholm 250 event taking place in the week between the Paris Masters and the ATP finals is a non race counter. But is this right? There is some inconclusive discussion about this in menstennisforums.

Basically the entry list is those who where still in some sort of race contention at the start of Vienna. No doubt some will pull out !

Ah ha, our posts crossed, Jon. You have answered my question

Presumably come back in Carreno-B and Basilashvili for starters.

The article below confirms Stockholm as last event in Race

stockholmopen.se/en/new-dates-for-stockholm-open-2021/

Quote - In its new position in the final week of the regular ATP season, the Stockholm Open could play a key role as the final qualification spots for the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals are determined,

Live tennis says they are out still though presumably they cant get enough extra 250 level points to add to their totals?

But they may have it wrong of course !

By the way I have also edited Schwartzman back to 1900 points, having temporarily given him Berrettini's QF final points.

It certainly appears that if Stockholm counts then there are enough points still available for at least C-B and Bash to catch Hurkacz if they play both Paris and Stockholm.

So - it seems Stockholm is in according to their own website and the entry list would align with that.

however, it looks like Live tennis have that wrong and arent counting Stockholm and this getting their assessment wrong ! Ha!

which may explain why they have called the qualifies consistently one week ahead of the atp as they are factoring in less points as available !

it will make Stockholm particularly complex if the race is open as all the players will have different current counters to factor in for a 250 level event?

Bit stupid to count Stockholm. I remember last season when Jamie/Neal won the title in Sofia by walkover because all Melzer/Roger-Vasselin needed to was make final and then they preferred to travel ASAP to London rather than play the match.

I think youre correct looking at their current counters, both would get enough points winning Paris and Stockholm to overtake Hurkacz. Very remote chance though for them and a few others but you never know!

Yes I remember in the past when they had one year ( or was it two? ) when the Paris Masters was the immediate week before the ATP Finals. Bit of a nightmare for many folk when the line-up can be unresolved until very late on.

As a better picture , Wiki seems to get it right

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_ATP_Finals

It has Basilashvili and PCB , RBA as able to qualify and also Sonego appears able to get enough points if he wins Vienna, Paris and Stockholm!

In doubles, they have just 6 able to qualify- worth noting wiki says Polasek is unable to qualify with Peers as he is already in with Dodig. Not sure if that is definitive, presumably one has to play with ones first partner that you qualify with or the highest points tally partner ?

That makes it 12 players can mathematically qualify , 6 pairs in doubles

I found it a sad watch Murray losing here. Once again the quality was high from both players at times but as the match slipped away Murray looked very tired and fatigued, resigned to defeat with nothing left in the tank. He has been mixing with the top end for the last few weeks but has not managed to go deep in any tournament. Maybe he will come back brightly in Paris, I would not put it past him, but my feeling last night was to call time on the season. He's get a lot of good tennis in the bank, maybe a rest and reset (mentaly) and he would be in a better place for the start of next season?

He has always had a poor demeanour on court when losing, but he looks heavy now. I still think Andy has a lot to offer, but this week in week out timetable did seem to be taking its toll last night???

Andy Murray on his plans 4 rest o season: "I'm definitely playing in Stockholm, I think Paris was looking positive, but not 100 percent sure yet, so we'll wait to see on that. Davis Cup is not something I'm planning on." Says he wants proper off-season for family and practice.

not sure what it looks like on TV but Cam is in control and 5-2 up and about to win the set 6-2 (40-0). Looks impressive based on that
