I hadn't realised it was so long for a PR but of course it will be more than 6 months since she made that seemingly ill advised decision ( by herself or if that was on the advice of other(s) ) to take the coirt against Rybakina in Indian Wells, on the back of great wins vs Navarro and Keys but also very clear back issues.
All the best to her again going forward - may her form quickly pick up where it was and her back be perfectly fine..
From Tom Kershaw's Times Tennis Newsletter sent at the end of last month following her success in Wuhan:
Player of the month Sonay Kartal
The end of the tennis season had been in danger of becoming something of a damp squib from a British perspective. Jack Draper has already confirmed he will not play again this year. Emma Raducanu has offered no public indication, but is expected to follow suit, while Arthur Fery has endured an indifferent run since his extraordinary Wimbledon campaign.
But the Wuhan Open was the unlikely setting for a fantastic comeback from a player who has been forced to spend much of the year in the shadows. Sonay Kartal had been in exceptional form and reached the fourth round at Indian Wells before a back injury ruled her out for six months.
The 24-year-old's ranking plummeted to No 170 during that period, but her run to the final of the WTA 1000 event in China immediately propelled her back up to No 52, and the calibre of players she defeated en route - Anhelina Kalinina, Belinda Bencic, Jasmine Paolini, Elina Svitolina and Jelena Ostapenko - suggested it can be more than a one-off too. One respected coach even texted me last week saying he believes Kartal can crack the top 20 if she stays fit.
