Week 1 - ATP Cup - Sydney, Australia - outdoor hard

I think this camarderie is what Dan has been missing by moving to Dubai, it looks like it is a fundamental part of his form, hopefully he'll recognise that and move back here.

Great stuff from Dan, it's a shame Cam wasn't playing at his best at the same time .
I hope Joe & Cam return to full health & fitness soon.

Dan's three singles wins mean he has almost defended his points from two years ago - I reckon he needs another win though, and Felix is a break up on Zerev so a Canadian win looking ever more possible.

Really pleased to see Evo doing well again, it was demoralising seeing the run at the back end of last year!

Zverev battling back and looking like taking it to a 3rd set. If GB can make it through we would play Russia - Evo could bear Safiullin, definitely, Medvedev v Cam would clearly look like a Russian win and the doubles we should feel confident about.

But we need Zverev to see his job through and then a German doubles win, so a long way to go

Felix wins in three sets, so game over.

As Germany had nothing to play for it was always a forlorn hope that they might win the tie.

Such a shame that Cam seemed to be suffering after effects of Covid, could have been a very different story - and good for Evo keeping us challenging up till now

This ATP format is rubbish and flawed. The final group games should be played at the same time such that the Germans weren't playing for nothing.. This is what happens in the Euro's or World Cup in the group stages.
The lack of semi finals also feels under done, a real short cut to wrap up what now feels like a warm up event for the AO. ATP have undermined their own offering despite the rhetoric.

Attendance is also appalling. Zero atmosphere outside of home team.

exactly what it feels like and indeed what it is. Davis Cup felt much more real and meaningful whatever we think about the format.

I think the ATP need to hasten those discussions to merge this with DC in some way; being held here at start of the season and just before a slam will always mean it feels like this, IMO.

The old World Team Cup in Dusseldorf (ran by the ATP and really the same event as this, just 15-20 years back) felt exactly the same, just before the French and similarly a warm up event.

Why on earth could both matches not have happened at the same time.

If USA had won I bet Germany would have done so too.

Really dumb from a competition point of view. Maybe they were hoping the same fans could attend both to generate some atmosphere.
