I was wondering why the matches on Court 1 were so far behind - then I saw that Josh Paris won in a MTB after two tie-break sets - match lasted almost three hours !
Well, Matt Southcombe is a rare breed in GB tennis - an 18 year-old who looks like a 24 year-old - pretty tall, strong (not chubby, but strong) - more rangy than Anton but similar 'fully grown' look. Gives the ball a real smack. Single-handed backhand. He'll have fun at US college.
Just beat Oscar Weightman (who at age 20 is still very slender and slight) 10-8 in the MTB.

Enjoyed the bits I watched of that match
Matt S probably the better player of the two brothers. Allegedly also the quieter of the two. As you say should be a great fit for college tennis, from memory I dont think hes signed yet??

Impressed with Phoenix, very consistent and his single handed backhand is very good.
Yes, I agree. I was surprised by the lack of UEs (rare in juniors). And, yes, he gets a lot of power on the single handed b/h which - again - is difficult for a younger player. Nice technique on serve (unlike the junior of the same age, Kyle Hughes, for instance, yesterday, where it's a bit dodgy). As you say, a lot to like.
Phoenix has always been a huge talent from a very early age. Not being in the national academy does not seem to have affected his results and hes performing better than most, if not all of the age relevant boys. Maybe having an individual programme is better for his development rather than in a group which has more constraints as they cant individualise everything, unless you are the chosen 1 or 2 there who get special treatment. Also the national academies are not full time as players have to attend local schools which can impact scheduling. As long as hes getting funding from the lta to help him - maybe this is the better way forward.
Don't know if this has been covered before but looks like ranking points have changed for the ITF tournaments again.
