Week 2 - Australian Open - men's qualifying (outdoor hard)

4-6 2-2*

Liam holds to 30 despite a couple of cute sliced winners from Safiullin.

4-6 *2-3 Safiullin

Safiullin comes out on top in the longest rally of the game and that apart holds easily to love.

Two errors and a DF and its 0-40. Liam saves one break point however hits long and wide again to hand an easy break of unforced errors to Safiullin. This could be over quite soon I feel.

Easy hold to love for Safiullin and Liam looks gone here. Too many errors today and his opponent keeping the ball in play is the story here.

Better from Liam who holds to love with 2 aces and a winner. Safiullin will serve for the match however.

Liam breaks to love with some great fighting. Another terrible net visit for Safiullin and a Liam down the line winner and DF gives him 3 break points. He keeps the ball in play and Safiullin goes long. Great fighting stuff and choke perhaps by Safiullin.

8 points in a row for Liam with an easy hold to love. Safiullin now making all the errors.

Safiullin stops the rot despite a magnificent return winner by Liam. Going for winners now and just misses the line to hand Safiullin the game to 15. Serving to stay in the match again.

Even if he can't come back, Liam will be the highest-ranked FQR loser or (if Ebden finishes off 2nd Q seed Gombos in a match that has been developing much the same way as this one from the seed's point of view) 2nd highest-ranked FQR loser, which would give him a very realistic chance of getting a lucky loser place. There are even scenarios (involving Novak getting removed after the OoP comes out but before his R1 match starts - unlikely scenario, I know) where a lucky loser's name could slot in right at the top of the draw. I'd rather Liam just came back to win though, obviously!

Great lob from Liam on the opening point however Safiullin smells blood and gets to Deuce. Another Deuce and some hard hitting and Liam hangs on.
