4-6 4-6 4-5*

Daniel will serve for the match. Its just not been Andys day here. Big points have deserted him.

Not watched any of this - has Andy just been off? I have to say , with his experience and the words he has used, I wouldnt have expected him to be mentally off his game at all, seems a lot more dispiriting to me than any physical ailment, tbf

That is a big disappointment, really hoped for more from Andy in this match. We have always been used to him being up and down, it is the way most tennis players are at this level, but I think this was one he should have expected to be up for and to win.

Darnation

Having time to digest the match Daniel was simply too good for the way Andy approached the match. Andy relies on errors a lot from his opponents, Daniel made very few errors. That coupled with Andy missing forehand winners he usually works his way into and some solid serving from Taro made it more difficult. I did not expect Andy to be out-aced either, he seemed to have issues on most service games and Taro seemed to know what Andy was going to do.

So very few errors from Taro, Andy missing on key forehands and not taking the game to his opponent caused his downfall. I also get the feeling that Andy expected Taros level to drop and it simply didnt he was steady all through. Andy is normally tactically astute when back against the wall but when he lost the first set I never at any stage felt hed get it back so that perhaps tells you it all. Physically I didnt really see him toiling more mentally and tactically poor today. At no point did he hold any parts of his body or rest. In fact he generally won a lot of the longer rallys.

Hopefully he selecta a few decent European events in February. I wonder if he will skip the clay. I wouldnt be surprised if he did. At least he wont need Wild Cards for Slams Id imagine. A target of top32 for US Open should be the aim, certainly top 50.

Talk about quick thinking.

This got hidden in the middle of Jaggy's excellent timeline so I thought I would give it a bump.

If you haven't seen it, it's well worth a watch. Not something you see everyday.

any loss to Daniel means you have had a bad day at the office, regardless if you have a metal hip or not, he is such a poor player. I can see why Murray is angry with this one.
