Week 15 - ITF M25 - Nottingham, UK (outdoor hard)

Bit of a shock (not really in the right way) in the doubles as the top seeds (Ali and Charlie) lost to Stuart and non-GB

Ali maybe concentrating on getting to the singles final which would mean overtaking a certain N. Djokovic in the singles race

Had a really enjoyable day there despite the mens singles all being indoors today. For what its worth (not very much at all) this was my assessment of what I saw.

Shaw (v Bemelmens) - Shaw hits a really solid ball from a settled position and caused the experienced Belgian quite a few problems. His biggest issue is probably his movement and as the game wore on Shaw was made to move from side to side a fair bit and particularly his backhand wasnt great on the run. But he showed good ability and decent character and with a little more luck and composure couldve won the first set. A decent showing all in all.

Jansen v Little- Jansen is very slight but played a pretty impressive game, he returned well and didnt look overawed at all. He was a bit too fixated on umpiring calls but he seems to have a decent short range. Hit a couple of lovely drop shots although did try drop shots ill advisedly on a couple of occasions which cost him points. Got cautious under pressure when serving to stay in the first set and left the ball short which Little put away. He has been accepted to Yale and will go there this autumn and showed enough promise to believe that hell be worth watching as he grows stronger and more experienced.

Cox v Whitehouse- at this level Dan Cox is going to make you work hard and be consistent and Whitehouse cut a pretty disconsolate figure quite early into this game. Dan was able to get into the rally on Whitehouses serve and Mark just didnt have the consistency to keep the ball in play under pressure. I dont know anything about Marks situation but a knowledgeable judge suggested he had that look in his eye which suggests he wont be playing the sport professionally all that much longer. On the other hand its great to see Dan back and enjoying the sport. He has certainly bulked up a lot since the early part of his career and hits the ball beautifully as always. Will be great to see how far he can go.

Harris v Pow- Pow is a fairly slightly built left-hander and caused Harris some real problems early on. He hits the ball sweetly and was very competitive in advance of calling for a MTO after which he had his knee strapped up. I didnt watch the game closely enough to offer any more than that really.

And that was it really.

Absolutely.

Pleased to see that Jan got through too

Dan Cox and Jan must be well high on Bob's list of our next 500-ers

Like Mike Shaw, Sean Hodkin put up a very good show against the high seed, but ended up losing in three sets

Anton has come through (also in three sets) in a match that could have been a banana skin (against Tracy Austin's son)

8 out of the 11 Round One winners so far are Brits, looking strong again this week.
