Weeks 21 & 22 - French Open (Roland-Garros) - Paris, France (clay)

Djokovic vs Nadal
Zverev vs Alcaraz

What a super SF line-up. Except it's just the top half of the QF!!

So many of us will remember the amazing win of Anton Mat. over Holger Rune (DEN) in Junior Wimbly 2019

And three years later Rune is one of the biggest stories of the draw, so far.

Age 19, he's playing the French Open for the first time. Ranked ATP 40.

And he's now in the last 16, having won three rounds, SO easily, all in three sets, barely breaking a sweat.

Make that the quarters after he beat Tsitsipas (4) in four!  Plays his fellow Scandinavian, Ruud (NOR) (8/WR 8)!  wink

Never mind, Daniil, clay isn't your thing, and thanks to the combined efforts of Wimbledon and the ATP & WTA there's still a very good chance that you will be WR 1 again if and when the Wimbledon points come off unreplaced.

It looks like Zverev is the only player that can stop this. It would though require him to win the French Open title, or be RU and pick up very good grass court points before Wimbledon, to go into pole position over Medvedev.

Djokovic is stuffed with regards to WR 1 post Wimbledon with 2000 points to drop from both the French Open 2021 and Wimbledon 2021 and only currently able to replace the French Open points.

Being frank i want Zverev as number one less than Medvedev- I hope Zverev never makes it to number one , full stop.

I'm with you, Jon. Given the choice of Medvedev or Zverev as WR 1, definitely Medvedev.

Djokovic/Nadal heading to the end of the 4th now. Looked like Novak was going to square the match at 2 sets all but Rafa broke back and it is now 5-5 (4th set - Nadal two sets to one up). Fantastic stuff.

Tehe!  Top seed dumped out in four by the fifth seed (6-2 4-6 6-2 7-6(4)).  biggrin  Not that I'm overly fond of Rafa.  I just hate Djoko.

And Nadal prevails in the 4th set tiebreak.
Astounding that so many people were still there watching at 1.15am!

The film would have it writ - Nadal wins here, against the odds he wins Wimbledon, beating Andy Murray in the final. But its a no points Wimbledon and so that and his Aussie Open wins with a missing Djoko are questioned by the haters. Nonetheless he goes to New York with the calendar year grand slam on the line. Roger Federer though makes his reappearance at New York and, against all the odds, Federer somehow gets to play Rafa in the final. Who wins ? We will need to wait til next time for that story to be told!

Today's results went almost as bad as possible for me. I wanted Trevisan, Stephens, Alcaraz, and Djokovic to win. I actually don't like Djokovic, but at least he embraces the villain role. Nadal has always rubbed me the wrong way with his false modest and his ever-ready injury excuses. Alcaraz was the big disappointment for me today though.

Yes, real pity about Alcaraz losing to Zverev.

I'm not so bothered about Nadal beating Djokovic. I certainly don't have such strong feelings against Nadal, and much as Djokovic may embrace the villain role at times, in truth he desperately wants to be loved and that generally just isn't going to happen.

Djokovic is currently projected to fall to WR 6 and that could get worse, ( with Rublev and Ruud still going here ), once you take 4000 points for his French Open and Wimbledon 2021 titles off his live 8770 points. Rather nonsense in terms of achievement and ability, but not unamusing.

Post Wimbledon projected WR 1 remains between Medvedev and Zverev.
