Weeks 21 & 22 - French Open (Roland-Garros) - Paris, France (clay)

I was rooting for Alcaraz (no love for Zverev) BUT, as a neutral, that last set of tennis between the two was just amazing, one of the best sets I've seen for ages, and Zverez deserved the match overall, and it was great to see him finally playing really well.

Cilic was the person who blew me away with his level (against Medvedev) - he said it was one of the best matches he's ever played, and I think he was right. I definitely would like him to beat Rublev.

Pleased that Nadal beat Djoko.

In the Scandi-fest bash, I've no real interest as such, and both are rather am-dram for my liking, but the fresh-faced Rune makes a nice story.

Cilic v Ruud, nadal v Zverev then in tomorrows semis.

Cilic has never reached a French semi before, obviously he has done it at the others. But its historically been his least effective slam. Kudos to him, hes an intelligent bloke and clearly hes worked it out as a surface, when it doesnt suit his game. Memories of Tim in 2004 or Johan Kriek back in the mid 80s.

Ill root for him in the semi

It's a strange one about Cilic.  I remember him winning the Junior title at Roland Garros in 2005 (mainly because he beat Andy in the semis).  I guess that if he goes on to win the title that might create a record for the largest gap between winning the junior title and the first pro title at a particular Grand Slam (one for anyone at a loose end to try to find an example 17 years or more apart smile)

Really nasty injury for Zverev at the end of the second set against Nadal - he turned his ankle really badly. Not one to look at if you are of a squeamish nature. Hes not particularly popular on here but a sad way to end a match.

I agree - really horrible looking - just completely turned it - screaming on the court - and good of him to come back on, on crutches, to shake hands.

Wish him all the best

So Rafa goes for French Open title #14, having won his previous 13 finals against 7 different opponents.

Well done to Casper Ruud on becoming opponent #8. But I am afraid I doubt that he will be the one to beat Rafa in a final.

Yes cant see anything other than straight sets by Rafa. It sounds however like Rafa might be retiring soon if you listen to his comments about his foot. Fairly certain he wont be at Wimbledon anyway.

So far Ruud is playing a very poor tactical match .

Nadal is playing average compared to his standards and Ruud seems unable to take advantage of this .

Ruuds coach ! Who must be shocked at just how poor the tactics have been .Standing so far back even to receive Nadals second serve . Not even trying to change things up .

And he must have given up at the end of the second, being whitewashed in the third to hand Rafa the title on a plate!  disbelief

 Yes, pretty feeble really

The only person who will have truly enjoyed that is Rune - what a hoo-hah after their match no

But, yep, a poor final, with the only redeeming feature for the organisers being that Rafa won it, his 22nd title, his 14th at RG - it is truly amazing

I dont know about anyone else but this season so far has been very much an anti climax. Aus Open with Novak absent, then the French with the loaded one sided draw and therefore inevitable rubbish final and now Wimbledon which will have no Federer, Zverev, Medvedev, Williams sisters etc and no ranking points.

The sport isnt really doing itself any favours at the moment. Then factor in all the injuries, match fixing/tanking for cash and domestic abuse both past and present.
