Week 22 - ATP Challenger 125 - Surbiton Trophy - Surbiton, Great Britain (grass)

My first time in Surbiton today, Ryan looked pretty out of his depth in set 1. But proper stepped it up for set 2 / 3, hit some great balls. Decent serving and consistency - he deserved the win. I was impressed.

Liam was hitting some vicious forehands, looked in complete control and there wasnt much Jay could do. Most aggressive Ive ever seen him play.

Billy / Jack, to be honest, Billy didnt play badly but Jack is levels above. Billys a lot taller than I expected, big serve and a nice backhand but movement a bit lacking. Jack was just firing on all cylinders - very impressed.

Was there a forum bus outing to Surbiton?

Glad you all got to watch such good tennis.

I was on that bus. I really enjoyed my time on Centre and agree with all above.

Liam was playing at a level I have not seen him reach before, really encouraging. Poor Jay was not doing much wrong, I actually thought he looked decent too, Liam was just far too good today.

Much the same for poor Billy against Jack. Jack is the real deal for sure and after losing the first 9 points, Billy showed a quite decent game with a good serve. He was up against a rising Jack Draper though and just couldn't live with him.

Ryan. Great win, really impressed especially after the first set. Mannarino did not seem overly fussed with proceedings but make no mistake, Ryan deserved his win. Another high level performance from the Brits.

Jack versus Ryan will be interesting and also hopefully Versus Jubby later.

Andy v Liam and Andy v Jack are both mouth watering down the line. Long way to go before we get there though

Kudla was always going to be tough as was OConnell.

Meanwhile, Ryan giving Jack a good fight and Andy also in a first set tie break

which he took by 7-4.  For a player who had never played on grass before this event (according to the commentary), the Dutch leftie is proving quite handy!

Through to last 8 are 3 Aussies, 2 Americans, 1 Brit at least and up to 3, plus maybe a Dutchman or Finn to spoil the party.

Feels like a 1970s or 80s throwback!

The Aussies always come in force to Surbiton. Men and women. It's like a work outing - they're all there for each other, messing around, supporting each other, it's a great spirit.

He does. He's hardly pushing up at all for his serves and struggling to run around the court. What a shame for him at this time of the year. Looks like an ankle problem.

Oh no, not what we want to hear at all. Wonder if the leg strain hadn't properly healed?
