Great win for Ryan, cant comment on Jack but hopefully he was just being careful. First week on grass, grass is slippy and bigger blokes struggle. Ryan has the benefit of lack of height !
Going well for Paul so far, 6-2.
First time Ive seen him live. Very impressed- nice solid game, just getting on with the job. Broke in the first game and never looked back.
Only from livestream, but Jack was serving on one leg for much of the third set and obviously wasn't moving that well (although wasn't giving it to Ryan either, it's always a little deceptive).
That really was a match that was completely in Paul's grasp in the second set - he'll be really cross with himself over that one
Yes he just couldnt get control in the second set and sadly I felt there was a degree of inevitability about the result as the end of the second set progressed. I was sitting next to his support team and at that stage he kept telling them he wasnt happy with any of his shots today and later said they were horrific so it did feel like he talked himself down a bit, as clearly they had been fine at the start!
I am not sure that his team were helping much though! I know courtside coaching isnt allowed but if the best they can do is tell him to hit the ball, it is difficult to know where to go with that really!
Mind you, much could be said about Andys team earlier who seemed to be there just to listen to a lot of chuntering! Quite a few times, he kept saying he was flat and not sharp and his performance probably wasnt one of his best but he did enough. I thought it was interesting that all the chuntering stopped at the business end of both sets where he really seemed to focus in - so I guess this was all to do with keeping the motivation levels up.
I missed most of the Jack/Ryan drama. Watched the first set - Ryan started well but when Jack got back and eventually won the first set, I thought that was probably it and Jack would move on to win comfortably so I gave up my chair so I moved on (also because I needed to get out of the Sun for a few minutes as it was so baking hot). Only saw later on what had transpired so I cant add any more snippets I am afraid.
Anyhow a good couple of days. Three take aways -
1) There were an awful lot of LTA bods wandering around in immaculate official tracksuits trying to look terribly important but not sure what they must actually do
2) Thanks to all the local volunteers helping run the event. Very nice people and helpful
3) There are an awful lot of people who go to watch the tennis who dont know anything about tennis. To listen to people who dont know the scores and rules (and in one case yesterday couldnt even read the scoreboard to work out who was winning) explaining to another set of people who dont know the scores and rules was just laughable really! I know that people on here are at one end of the spectrum and maybe I am being harsh but it was quite shocking really. Best to leave it there I think as I am getting cross again.

Great report, brittak - the 'level of tennis knowledge' bit actually made me laugh out loud
(I remember one guy a few years back 'explaining', with great authority, to his friend that the players (ranked about 200) didn't really play tennis professionally, they just knocked up with mates at their club, and then turned up at Surbiton to have a bit of a match, as a bit of fun).
And, YES, the bods were certainly out in force - god knows how much the LTA spent on all those blinkin tracksuits.
But, as you say, great volunteers, really nice feeling at the club - I love the fact there are so many kids, and a lot of them talking about tennis and, even better, messing around and playing. In fact, since last time, the club has put in some mini courts on all-weather stuff which much be great in winter and - even better - a little Padel court for kids - it's wonderful - it's was always in use and has got glass sides so you can basically put 4 or 5 little kids in there, shut the door, the tiddlers spend ages bashing foam balls about, and they can't get out and you can keep an eye on them from afar.
Good call on the volunteers, very nice people and add to the event in many ways. Being half term it was good to see so many children watching the matches, getting their autographs and so on.
The feeling of being an interloper at moments is hard to avoid. I am sure the "in crowd" would have no idea that they can cause this feeling, its a hard one to answer unless someone at the LTA had a light bulb moment of developing a British Tennis fan base. At team levels this has worked but at tour events, not so much. Just daydreaming here but in football some clubs have had fans get together as supporters clubs, trusts etc to speak up collectively to their club. I once floated such an idea to members on here but it would be a lot of time and commitment for.....I am not too sure what actually? But I still like the principle behind the idea

Thanks, brittak. Some interesting insights. Just thought I'd point out that Andy's match is currently available on the Red Button. Sounds as windy there as it is where I am in North London! What a ghastly coloured shirt Nakashima's wearing. Andy currently *4-3 in the first set.
