I like Dan says it as he sees it ( not that I always agree with him! ) Rather than pat answers or just going along with some theory.
I do think grass on front of a home crowd inspires each individual a whole lot more than what anyone else is doing which should be minimal effect at best ( though home wins may put the crowd in a good mood ).
It would actually be a bit of an issue if they need particular other players doing well as a motivation.
Yes, it's curious (not about Dan - he's forthright and we love him for it )
But about the 'grass season' factor
It's obviously the 'time' for English tennis - many of our players are pretty average on grass (and why would they be any better than your average other player - they don't get to play much more grass than anyone else - those who train at NTC will have some access but it's not for very long - after all, the courts will only have opened in the last month - and it will very much depend on the weather).
So maybe it's partly Wimbledon - that's what inspired them as kids, that the goal, it's all part and parcel of this time of year, when everyone desperately wants to do particularly well
And maybe because for many of them too it's their only chance to play well-ranked players - i.e. the wildcard factor means that now's your chance to play a top quality MD, to do something amazing to happen - as mentioned a few weeks ago, it's sure that each year there's one or two players who really make their mark, far more than expected, taking the opportunity of the wildcard, maybe a good draw, a good match - and suddenly everything changes a bit. Emma Rad obviously was a key example from last year.
It's one of the reasons I still think the LTA were so out of order to forbid Oli Golding (and Liam et al) from playing Wimbledon that year - it takes the 'magic' bit out of the year - Oli obviously felt it very strongly (hence the rift, hence the quitting).

I see Ryan has reached 177 in the live standings, that is quite outstanding really.
Not sure what the Queens wild cards look likely to be, Andy and Jack D have one each, there is a WC and a WC A+ (what on earth is a WC A+?) to go but I would be very tempted to give Ryan one into the main draw. There are 3 into qualies which he should get but if he is in Nottingham still after Friday, he wouldnt be able to play.
If that doesnt work out - he should certainly get one into Eastbourne MD.
The courts at Nottingham are in really good condition compared with Stuttgart which I just looked at on stream.
Apparently the Wimbledon team work as consultants with Stuttgart on the grass courts, but one of the things of the European events is that the surfaces typically havent been anywhere near UK events standards. Just my opinion but:
- Halle - tend to be softer and dig up a little
- Stuttgart - similar to above i think, a few bad bounces
- 's-Hertogenbosch - tend to be a little sandy and dry out quite easily as well
- Antalya - when this was held the courts got quite hard, v quickly (temperature no doubt)
- Mallorca - similar to Antalya
Can't comment on Berlin, Bad Homborg and Gaiba but suspect the German venues may be the same as the German ones above?

Thanks for the summary. Back to UK, I have never seen the Eastbourne courts live, but Birmingham outside courts were always very poor, though I didn't see them last year. (The low and partial shade location doesn't help.). Nottingham's really are outstanding, all of them, in my opinion.
Liam did really well - he didn't have any momentum at the start of that second set - was being made look very average by Otto - and managed to shout himself into playing better - just digging deep and MAKING himself play better...
