RE: Week 24 - ATP 500 - Cinch Championships - The Queen's Club, London, Great Britain (grass)

QF:  (WC) Ryan Peniston WR 180 vs Filip Krajinovic (SRB) WR 48 (CH = 26 in April 2018)

Can't see him winning that one.  That said, stranger things have happened this week...  The Serb beat Querrey in three.

I still think he'd struggle at this level on slower surfaces where he had to play longer rallies. But as has been said, let's just enjoy it for what it is.

Some strange comments here. Yes, hes had a favourable draw but hes shown a lot of grit to win those matches, a lot of players made a career out of doing that.

He has absolutely flown up the rankings, you dont do that by chance. Lets just see what happens now.

Does Jack think he is playing at Roland Garros with the excessive topspin on the forehand and the aversion to leaving the baseline.

 Exactly what I was thinking

That was SUCH a bad match

Not that he lost - that's fine - Emil has a lovely game on grass

But that Jack was so far back, hitting such a topspin lifted ball, completely useless on grass, AND that he didn't change and at least try something different when he was getting thrashed playing like that

I had to go out at 2-0 in the third. How did Ryan turn it around, or did his opponent collapse?

Well done to Ryan in any case. So pleased for him.

I had to go out at 4-4 in the third, just seen the result. Delighted for Ryan, onwards and upwards smile

I'm not sure that "transgressing" means what that journalist thinks it does.

Thanks for the link.

Ive not commented yet as I wanted to take stock. This has been a life changing week for Ryan, hes propelled himself to a ranking level where he can suddenly look at top 100, In the public consciousness and made some big money as well. Hes bought himself comfort he didnt hand to move on and attempt to realise his dreams.

Like most players ranked 100 to 200, he has limitations - thats why he was ranked there- and he isnt blessed with Jack Drapers size and power. But hes got fight and desire and that carries you a long way.

Hopefully he can carry this through to a wildcard into Eastbourne and then Wimbledon and the US season (Newport seems to be first), and live the dream for the rest of the season at least.

Very strage use of that word. He didn't mean transgress, he meant progress. But I digress.  I wonder if the English language pedants board ever talk about tennis?

Just wondered if everyone heard the really amazing coincidence story on the Queens commentary yesterday - it you didn't, this was John Lloyd's story:

John Lloyd's dad, Denis, used to play and coach at some club in Essex.

Ryan Peniston's dad was/is a train driver.

So, one day, Mr P is driving his normal route, the train track backs onto tennis courts, and he sees an empty court with a body lying on the ground.

So he beeps his horn and nothing happens

So when Mr Peniston gets to the next station, he stops, gets out and alerts medics/whoever that there might be a problem with someone at the tennis club

And it turns out that the guy lying on the ground was John Lloyd's dad ! He's recently had surgery, had overdone it a bit and collapsed. And Mr P may well have saved Mr L's life

After that, the two families became quite good friends.....

I'm sure it doesn't, but I forbore to draw attention to the faux pas this time because of what happened earlier in the week, when I thought I was making to clear that the comment on the spelling of "tonnes" was mine, & mine alone, nothing to do with the journo or the sub, by leaving "[sic]" in ordinary type instead of italics, but obviously not clear enough!  wink  stevemcqueen above is right.  It should have been "progressed".  The Standard's journos are even more prone to such malapropisms than those of The Times, I'm afraid.  no

Well said Jon, my thoughts exactly!

I used to play tennis with a guy who worked for News International as a journalist. I asked him if he worked for the Times and he explained that, no I work for News International - he worked for the Times, Sun and News of the World. Hed swap and write in the style required- hed often write the same article in two or three styles. He wasnt a headline name, hed be the person writing the words whilst someone more famous put their name to it, sometimes 3 different names in the different papers.

it made me realise the journos at the Times are no better than the Sun- they are

often the same person !

I heard that & also the other one, when Ryan's performance was being discussed:  the two men had been sitting watching Ryan play & Dennis offered Mr P a bit of advice on possible future coaching arrangements along the lines of "they'll be coming for him", meaning the LTA's coaches, but that Mr P shouldn't let him go because in those days, they were so bad!  He was very careful to add, in view of the fact that Scott Lloyd, his nephew is now the LTA's Chief Exec, that they're much better now.  wink
