Yes, there was a few comments last week about Ryan that I didn't agree with and I gave my defence for why.
It seems that you have to be a stereotype to have success in tennis these days. Or that's what is perceived anyway.
One particular comment that riled me last week was that someone said 'he is ranked 100-200 for a reason, he has limitations'.
The reality is, Ryan hasn't been ranked in that space for a long period of time compared to Jay or Liam.
He has a very different game to a lot of the big guns, and for some reason people write him off because of it. I don't understand it. I just hope he keeps winning!
Yes that comment riled me too Jaffa. I decided best to keep my own counsel but glad to see I was not alone in it getting under my skin!
Guys, firstly I want to apologise, I hadn't remembered, but it was me that said that. I actually wrote this in the link below: I may have been clumsy and , first thing to say, is that I am a big fan of Ryan, I really am. I was trying to say he isnt blessed with the big game of a Jack Draper and isnt blessed with that ability to win matches and rise up the rankings based on that power and big game - but he has fight and desire and he has smarts. I was trying to say he is ranked 100-200 at the moment because that is where he is at right now, he isn't a Tour level player yet - but he may well get there.
I hope I didn't upset anyone too much and I truly didnt mean to cause any hurt.
I am glad Ryan won today, I was actually surprised he did, but very pleasantly surprised and I hope he can go on and have the career he deserves.
This is what I wrote at the time and I hope you can tell it wasnt supposed to be insulting to Ryan. It is halfway down page 14 in case anyone wants to tear me apart - sorry once again if it was taken the wrong way

Hey Jon, I remember you writing some very nice things about Ryan in the past and also commenting on his story. So I didn't take it in a bad way. It's easy to misunderstand / misinterpret on these forums.
Thanks Jiwan - someone wrote above that Ryan's game is very different to the big guns. It is, and that is great. If we look at our top players, Cam, Dan, Andy, Jack, Liam, Ryan, Jay, Paul now as well and Kyle when he is fit, they all have very different attributes they bring to the table and that is good to see and makes it very interesting.

Fair play Jon, its one of those situations where something read on a screen can be interpreted differently compared to how you would if youd actually heard someone say it.
However any of these guys play, it's clearly working. 4 guys in the last 16 so plenty more to come this week. British Tennis just has an energy about it right now. Go GB.

No worries. Ryan has got the rub of the green with Martinez in the next round. Indeed he and Jack could play, again, and Cam and Dan. Too much to hope for 4 in the last 8 in the top half?!
Ryan is up to 103 live race (sorry, someone may have mentioned this above, I have been out all evening and not checked too far back) - we have 6 players now in the top 100 Race or on the cusp. Two players in the 130's as well.

This is becoming heady times in the British game.
It's really good stuff, although I think it's 5 rather than 6 in or around the top 100 ( Cam, Dan, Andy, Jack, and Ryan ) plus the 2 players in the 130s ( Jay and Liam )
Incidentally I was just looking at Jodie's points for this year She's GB #5 in that particular table and looks just about in the top 100.
So as well as 5 men in or on the cusp of the top 100 in their race we have 5 women in a similar position in the women's 'race' ( not really the WTA race because that just counts WTA tour points but a good indication of how they are looking for a ranking position later in the year ), ie. Emma, Harriet, Heather, Katie B; and Jodie.

Heady times indeed !
Indeedy, miscounted!!
I commented in the womens thread about how our BJK Cup team suddenly looks very interesting for Glasgow in November.
Our mens Davis Cup team for Glasgow in September starts to look more interesting. Presumably Andy will be up for that, and Cam and Dan and Andy will be clearly favoured, but Jack and Ryan start to look like having a shout as back ups, plus Joe, Neal, Jamie, Lloyd in doubles, as well as the fact any of Cam, Dan and Andy can play a decent doubles game.
I had a rough day yesterday in that my wife, baby and I were all up in the night vomiting and I felt really rough but what a day to be off sick and get to watch some extra tennis!! Couldnt have gone better! Would so love to see the 4 guys win their second rounds and fill the whole top half for the quarters! So enjoying the access to amazon prime that I unexpectedly have since a friend staying logged into my tv! Couldnt have planned things better if Id tried! So hoping this form translates to Wimbledon results on big courts of our girls and guys!
Just wondering what people think the factors are in Ryans improved results - is this something that is down a lot to grass and home advantage and crowds or will we see this translate to the rest of the year/career and he will be top 50? Howd he do on grass previously? Also would he and Cam have played college at the same time at all?
I hope that the friend staying didn't bring that sickness bug with him GBJ
Ryans form has taken us all by surprise I am sure but what is exciting though is he has also had good results on clay. The future could indeed be very exciting for him. The next block of tournaments leading up to the US Open are very important.....will he back it up at all? This applies to many of our players mind, what a grass season it has been so far
