Week 25 - The Championships, Wimbledon (grass) - men's qualifying

Sadly , looking at the draw for the first time, I dont see anyone qualifying. Despite what I said above about his opening opponent, I actually think Charlie has the best route - but still think we wont get anyone qualifying , sadly .

We practically never get anyone qualifying - it's normal

OK - there's time to go before kick-off - I'm changing my forecast - I'm going for zero

I've had this feeling (very scientific ) as mentioned somewhere else that our mid-players have been doing brilliantly these past few weeks, when points are on offer, but will completely bomb at Wimbly (and the higher ones will take over - Cam, Emma (?), Dan)

So, when falling asleep last night, I suddenly thought - but why did I go for three? They're all going to bomb.....

So, that's it folks, zero

I'm not going to predict who. But I'll stick to that somehow we will cobble together two wins.

If the bookmakers are relevant, they have us at one slamdunk and a possible second, which might back up the two-ers:

Aidan v Chile guy is 6x v 1.12x

Anton is 2x v 1.72, which is pretty close

The others are all outsiders

Aidan and Anton are two of my three and I have a sense re battling Billy as my third

It's the perennial problem that those with a genuine chance of qualifying, have already been given WCs directly into the MD - unless your name is Marcus Willis of course  wink

Absolutely ! Good 'ol days biggrin

Even Dan Evans didn't come through qualis in 2018 (wasn't it?) when he had to play the wildcard play-offs coz the AELTC were being such snotty ****s

Katie Swan managed it last year.

But generally I've zero problem with us having no qualifiers - as you say, the whole point is that those who should qualify have already got MD WCs (as is good and proper, IMHO biggrin

A few weeks ago I would've said Anton but he doesn't seem to be in the form he was last year. He's down to do some clay tournaments so I wonder if his game is going through a transition to improve it over the long term.

ETA 1 through today, 2 would be a reach but let's see. Planning a trip on Wednesday if anyone makes it through the 1st round

I see that the BBC Sports website is giving a link to showing qualifying "at the All-England Club".

Ha to anyone that went along to Roehampton

Court 11 seems to be the tv court currently Kubler v Ilkel on the red button. But then, if they stay with court 11, its Arthur , Anton and Jack Sock.

Not sure how kubler and ilkel got the nod!

Charlie Broom lost the first set but has a second set break

Didn't see a single ball of that but, to be honest, that's a better score than I'd expected.

So well done to Luca - he's a junior for another year, only 2005, so this was always an 'experience' thing for him, and to raise the value of the national championships. All good.

Charles got an insurance break to lead *4-0 in the second set. He immediately cashed it in. 4-1*
