Re Berrettini, I wouldn't be surprised if there's not several more players who are affected and withdraw in the next few days - there's so much in London at the moment, and no one's wearing masks or doing distancing or whatever any more
Oh yes, they are: I still wear one whenever I go into a supermarket, visit my GP's surgery/Specsavers or travel on public transport. That said, other than at the surgery/Specsavers, I find I'm generally in a very small minority!

Yes, you're like a rare migratory bird now - there's a few about, here and there - that stand out - but the vast majority of the sparrows and blackbirds are just normal - twittering about - no masks to be seen.....

AND a lot of rather unpleasant Omicron....
Im not sure how its affecting people in terms of serious illness but my wife and I, and our daughter, all had omicron recently. We are all clear for around 10 days or more now but all have a lingering cough and very dry throat, and most importantly, short of breathe. it wasnt pleasant at all during it either - I can imagine a pro tennis player not feeling able to play 5 set
matches if they felt like that , not serious but certainly performance impacting

Apparently the Omicron virus affects the outside of the lungs, as well as/instead of the inside which is what most viruses do. I'm still suffering a reduced ability to breathe from March... very slowly improving
I know I'm going to be in the minority here but if a player has no symptoms I don't see why they shouldn't be able to play. It wouldn't have been that hard to manage contact between the player and other people somewhere like Wimbledon. Given how prevalent covid is right now there are probably 100s if not 1000s of spectators probably infected right now.

Do you know that they can't play?
I mean, are players getting tested routinely still?
Because, if not, then they wouldn't know they were positive if they were symptomless
I haven't heard or read anything about routine tests (but they might still be happening and I just don't realise, of course)

BBC report says there are no routine tests anymore but Berrettini had flu like symptoms and had been isolating. He tested to protect his fellow players and with drew when positive. He could probably have not tested and got away with it but he did the responsible thing in testing if he had symptoms and, being frank, Im sure hed have struggled to play 5 sets with flu like symptoms anyway.
it leaves the section he was in wide open - the section of 8 has 3 lucky losers and a qualifier in it with Brooksby the remaining seed. It is next to Jack Draper and Liams section and they could both see a route to the last 8 look very much open now.
