Week 28 - ITF W25 - Roehampton, GB Hard

First proper match in 3 years for Angelica. I see she had a few UTRs last year, but nothing ITF-wise since the UK swing in Aug 2019. She was at Stanford University, but not sure how her tennis was going there. It's hard to tell where she is at given the lack of data, but possibly half a chance against Naiktha.

She's been playing a fair amount in Stanford primarily at no.3 singles , according to the college website. Tally of 28-7 in singles and 24-7 in doubles for the 2021-22 year.

A great haul of wins! From the entry list, it didn't look likely we'd have 13/32 main draw players - really good to see.

As we know, 5/8 of the 25ks so far this year have been won by Brits. I think a semi finalist here would be a great result.

And Naiktha has won the first set too, against Angelica, 6-2

Angelica went a break down in the second too, but just broke back with a good game...and a rather poor DF from Naiktha.

Bains 6-2 3-3* Blake

Close run thing in the second set, but Naiktha closed it out.

Also a great result for Indianna Spink beating Maia Lumsden 6-4 6-4.

Freya doing a good job against second seed Viktoria Kuzmova, currently on serve in the third set 3-6 7-6(5) *2-3. Emma has made a strong start against Tjandramulia, leading 6-3 1-0*.

But Kristina struggling a bit against Kruger, trailing a set and a break.

[5] Lulu Sun SUI d. Q Danielle Daley GBR 6-3 6-4

Good to see Eliz get the win. She hadn't been seen on grass or in any ITFs since she lost to Isabelle Lacy in Surbiton qualifying at the end of May.

From 4-0 up in the 3rd set tiebreak, Freya deserved to lose sadly - she chipped and sliced everything, and it wasn't working at any point.

If only she'd followed through her shots in the tiebreak as she followed through on her launching her racket against the wall after her block return sailed long on match point, maybe she could have closed it out.

Great effort but no reward

And that just about sums her up - she knows what she has to do but she just can't do it when under stress because her trainers allowed her to get away with it way too much so it became engrained

(Q) Emma Wilson WR 1084 beat Olivia Tjandramulia (AUS) WR 419 by 6-3 4-6 6-4.

Will take Emma into the top 1000 with 20 points from 6 counters all added this year. Will give us 30 in the top 1000.

A super win for Alicia Dudeney over the top-500 Japanese girl

She was playing really well in qualifications, as said, so I had arranged my day to catch a bit of this match - and glad I did - really well done to her

Good effort by Sofia Johnson, taking the top seed to a second set tie-break. Kerkhove took a set off Swiatek in the second round at Wimbledon (and beat Sonay in the first round in three sets)

Yes, Sofia has been a bit of a revelation to me this summer - have watched several of her matches now (or bits thereof) - a lot to like - and the US obviously suiting her well

The home events are so good in this regard - there are always a few heart-breaking losses (thinking of Freya, and Finn Murgett here), a couple of stellar stand-out wins (Emma Wilson, Alicia Dudeney, say) and then some very good efforts by up-and-coming players (such as Sofia)
