Evo plays his last 8 match today. Not sure the reason (rain?) but the other matches are all still last 16 and so the rest of the draw will need to play two times tomorrow to catch up. If Evo gets through today, it could play in his favour.
Dan was really sweet, going over and bending over, asking how he was feeling etc
Frankly, Dan, I'd have kept my distance - that man has some nasty lergy !
Paragraph tacked on to a report on Emma's victory over Camila Osorio in this morning's Times:
Fellow Briton Dan Evans is also into the last eight after a battle of his own. Evans, 32, lost the first set to America's Taylor Fritz, the No 3 seed, 6-3 and came through a tie-break in the second to force a decider. Then, with Evans 4-1 up in the final set, Fritz was forced to retire after struggling in the heat.
And a comment by one reader:
Last man standing on the court nearby. Having been knocked about in the first set, plucky Dan rolled with the punches coming his way but hung on grimly in the heat. The more he saw Fritz weaken, the stronger his own resolve grew and the more ebullient his outward display showed, to the point where Fried Fritz finally folded. Strength of character got Dan through that. I suspect some of that is down to his Argentine coach. A very good win, well done, Dan!

and fitness and ability to cope with extreme conditions is part of the pro game - not sure Dan had a very good win, but kudos to him for outlasting his opponent!
He has a 0-4 record against Nishioka, each time on US hardcourts, each time the Japanese player has been ranked way lower at the time they played. It is a curious match up and I hope Dan can fathom him out this time!

Once was at Australian open 2020, i watched it, unless my memory is playing me tricks. But Dan is a different player now and just recently seems to have picked up again after a lull.
Nice to get the wins but I'd like to see more evidence going forward. Here he's well beaten a far from back up to speed Kyle and as has been said was being knocked about by Fritz ( though Fritz has been playing very well and I was surprised by Jon's 'feel' for this match, though doesn't matter how that 'feel' is vindicated )

Being honest - I thought Dan had little chance of winning apart from I just feel he is due a turnaround, as he is too good not to turn it around. I agree, beating Kyle and Fritz like he has gives me no feel for where he is at, dont think we can say he has turned it around, but sometimes you need breaks and maybe he has got them.
If he can beat Nishioka today, I will start to feel more positive!
But my "Dan will beat Fritz" call was more in hope than judgement!!

I wonder if he's still a bit affected by a bad bout of Covid. My son's got long Covid and he's still struggling to get out of bed four weeks later (he's 18!).
