This is painful to watch . Once again Emma keeps floating balls back and Giorgi hammers them away . A missed volley to go 5-3 up looks very costly now .
Camila is due to absolutely plummet down the rankings out the top 70 if she doesn't get a few wins this week. Bit of additional motivation/stress. Very similar situation to Emma in some ways, so much of the ranking dependant on one massive points haul and title.
I just dont understand why Emma doesnt hit through the ball now and instead floats balls back. Variation is fine , mixing things up but shes gone backwards and is not going to win matches playing like this against better players .
Despite some really excellent serving Emma is broken. Giorgi is just so huge in the rallies that if the return comes back she's totally on top. Not sure if she's reading the serve particularly well, or just seeing the ball so big today. Great net play from the Italian too.
2-1*

I don't think Emma has a lot of choice really. Giorgi is hitting the ball so hard and with great depth that often it's as much as Emma can do to get a racket on it. A typical Giorgi play is hard return to server's feet, which offers up a high ball ripe for putting away.
What a horror show . Embarrassing . Id rather see her play attacking tennis make lots of errors and lose than these limp passive displays .
It was a tough draw and Giorgi can be very good but Emma had chances in that first set and blew them . At the moment youd never back her to come back from a set down and know if she loses the first the second will be easily won by her opponent .

Yes, this is the million dollar question.....and has been for the past 6 months or so...
She used to take the ball early, hit through it, a flat-ish shot....
Now she waits, uses top-spin, and tries to get kick on the ball - why????

Its unfathomable ! Its not working and against better opponents they just rifle a winner . I have no idea whats happened with her coaching but its been downhill ever since she got rid of Richardson .

Like you, I can only think it's a coaching thing
It's mainly the forehand side
But there's no reason that she would have changed it herself .... I can't help think it's a sort of Jeremy-Bates-style coaching advice - 'we don't like too many UEs, get a bit of air on the ball'
Her volleys are the same - there aren't that many, obviously, but she used to whack them away, when at the net, and now she tries delicate slices and what have you
Nowhere near as important as the forehand and return of serve issues but all rather consistent and, yes, just reeks of coaching
