It still seemed to me that Emma was lacking some penetration on her forehand, with quite a lot around the service line. But she served brilliantly yesterday, and handled the pressure really very well - there were moments when it felt like Serena might catch on, but Emma stayed calm and positive.
I've just had a look at the discussion thread on tennis forums, and it seems that Emma's level was considerably better than it has been, but also that Serena played awfully, especially in the second set and didn't really move well at all.
Also criticism of Emma's game that she is still mostly hitting down the middle of the court, and doesn't have enough variety. It does seem however that she has got back the hard hitting that won her the USO instead of the loopy stuff of late, and that there were a few positive interactions with her new/latest coach.
I see that the odds are quite close for tonight, so hopefully Emma can continue this form and get the W.
I was able to watch the replay this morning without knowing the result and it was an enjoyable watch.
I'm not sure how much it says about Emma's form right now but hopefully she will gain some confidence from the win. Her serves was really very effective but overall I though her play was ok not really brilliant. But what was impressive was her demeanor and mental strength. She could easily have got affected by the occasion but she didn't. A very mature performance.
Serena was basically not very good. There were some points where she played well but way way below her best level. Her serve will always win a few free points but her match fitness level is shocking.
Emma's next match will be much tougher, especially with quite a quick turn round and she will need to play a fair bit better to get past Azerenka.
Just watched the match on catchup. Agree with Helen40 re Serenas movement- shes a big powerful woman, must put a lot of stress on her joints and tendons?
Serena wasn't awful but Emma was able to cope with Serena's power. She didn't make Serena move from side to side as much as I would have expected but she served well and only made one unforced error in the match. Her next match will probably be a bigger test.
I have to disagree - Serna was awful most of the time. I watched the whole match today, and her movement was pretty poor. A lot of theose unforced errors were because she hadn't moved quickly enough and her feet were in the wrong position. She hit some good serves, but on the whole Emma could handle and return them. Yes, Emma could have made her move even more, but did enough to win comfortably.
