It's very hard to make a living as a player - if she's allowed to play the events, I wouldn't knock her for doing so
But also, by doing this she keeps the top 100 ranking and guarantees herself the hefty £60K GS MD pay checks.... Circa 240K a year from those tournaments isn't a bad sum for the future pension fund!
Yup this is classic vulturing to guarantee big pay checks, I know she can but there really should be something in place to restrict it. It takes opportunities away from players who should be playing at that level.
Yes, got to earn a living like say switching pretty much full time to doubles if singles just isn't working out.
But shes good enough to play singles and earn Slam money. Id rather be a top 100 singles player than a top 10 doubles player, and Im sure most players would.
I think I see what you are trying to do there but the example doesnt work.
I don't blame her for doing it but I do think they should limit the number of lower level tournaments top 100 players can play because if she's winning so many it means up and coming players are missing out on what for them is a big pay day. They have to make a living too and theirs is much more precarious.
I don't think they should "tinker" with the rules. Every time they do they make things worse.
I don't think reducing the number of lower level tournaments a top 100 player can enter would make things worse, particularly for players in the 200s and below that are trying to make a living too.
The rules need changing. If a player can enter the slams and earn K200 then no way should that player be able to participate in a 25K. It absolutely takes away a chance for a much lower ranked player to have that spot and earn valuable points and prize money that they may need badly given the pay is so low at the other end. Most players in 25K's can only dream of K200. A bit like myself.
Rus is knocked out in 3 sets by 18year old 377 ranked Dmitruk. Who is massively underranked at the moment. Probably a top 150 perhaps. So I guess the argument Rus should be allowed to play here stands. Anyway shes off to the US now to earn the 50k plus she earned of her own back
QF: BROGAN, Anna (GBR) 477 lost to BERBEROVIC, Nefisa (BIH) (2) 258 6-7(3) 0-6
Anna had 2 break points at 5-5 in the 1st but couldn't quite get over the line, she was also 3-1 in the tie break only to see her opponent win six points in a row. Nefisa always seemed to have a bit extra when needed.
