RE: Week 34 US Open Qualifying

Oh gosh, Emma Vs Cornet - an experienced, top 40 player who loves a big stage and has her share of upsets. And the rest of the 1/16th ain't lovely.

And Harriet vs Kasatkina.

Ugh.

I think ugh might be understating it a tad.

Kasatkina is so much improved over the last 12 months it is hard to see Harriet having much joy.

Cornet will relish this match up. She just loves a big stage and upsetting higher ranked players though a win over Emma wouldn't be that much of an upset apart from on paper.

Let's hope Katie and Heather can get through and get decent draws or our interest could well end in round 1.

Katie looked very comfortable in the first two games but has disintegrated. Forehand is non existent.

3-5*

Yes, I'd noticed that

Kruger is only a junior, she's 2004, and she's playing decently but nothing that special....

Katie is just slow and doesn't seem to be able to hit the ball....

Katie is winning 80% on her 1st serve but only 20% on her 2nd serve.

Shocking set 3-6. Very poor, and as you say CD, looks incredibly slow. Perhaps having a day she isn't feeling great, always difficult with the condition she has, I imagine it can just flare up anytime.

But still time to turn this around. Heather also about to start.

Also her serve was a weapon at the start of the match well over a hunred but then hovered at about 80.

Katie misses 5 break points in a six deuce game. Just lacking that edge today.

*2-2

Heather *4-2

As as aside, the two Czech juniors (Noskova and Fruhvirtova) have won their QR2 matches, barely dropping a game

What's up with Katie? Looks like she doesn't want to be there at all.

Didnt people say she looked like she was going to be sick yesterday? Is she unwell and playing through it maybe?

This is one of the worst performances I have ever seen from Katie. Just looks to be totally empty, no timing, no attack. Hope the chronic fatigue syndrome hasn't struck again, but that, or maybe some sort of bug, would explain a lot. She certainly didn't look to be carrying a niggle.

*2-4

Diatchenko is being dependably messy so far, but there's always a risk she pulls it together. Heather takes the set on a foot fault induced double.

6-3 *0-0

Yes, that's what I was wondering (and others too, it seems)

Not looking for excuses, she might just be playing poorly, but it's well possible that she's physically just not right

The American fell to pieces serving for it.

4-5*

Shame Katie effectively gave up after losing that long game and threw away the next two to go 2-5* down without much of a fight. Still had the chance to turn it round.

Heather was up a break in the second, but broken back.

2-1*

Katie loses 6-3 6-4. Disappointing as she should have steamrolled this section but I do think she's battling something health wise.

Heather misses two break points *2-2

Big hold from Heather.

Basically her first serve is doing good damage with loads of them unreturned, while her second serve is toast.

3-2*
