Weeks 35 & 36 - US Open, Flushing Meadows, New York City (hard)

Spoke too soon. Sousa breaks back. Cam not quite clicking yet. 3-2 Sousa.

Come on Cam! He's been a bit erratic in the first set but he comes through it 6-4.

At some points (like with the early break) Cam consistently gets the ball back without doing anything spectacular and Sousa gifts him games with unforced errors. But then Cam's form fluctuates and he's the one hitting long, knocking the ball out. This isn't vintage Cam, he's not radiating energy the way he did when he won Indian Wells, but it's proving just enough so far to keep Cam's nose in front.

6-4, 6-4.

You gotta give it to Cam he looked like he wasn't feeling his best but he turned it on for the big points, he found the athleticism when he needed it.

I'm away for two days so just hope all 4 are still in when I get home.

Supposedly it's the first time ever that we've had four guys through to the third round in the US Open

From the Beeb text commentary on Cam's match:

'All our hard work is paying off'

Norrie 6-4 6-4 7-6 (7-4) Sousa

Let's hear from Cameron Norrie:

"Just happy to be through. I was really nervous and I couldn't put my finger on why.

"It was tough - he was playing everything to my backhand and I was playing to his and it was quite tricky conditions

"A couple of points today I managed to take care of my serve and it was nice to stick in that third set and play a complete tie-break."

On four British men reaching the third round:

"It is very cool, especially Jack Draper coming through and same with Andy and Evo. We're all feeding off each other and all in form and all enjoying our tennis,

"Nice to show that all our hard work is paying off and there are plenty more guys behind us."

Holger Rune up next:

"Holger is a very competitive kid and we played in Cincinnati and we always have a battle. It is going to be tough and I am going to have to improve."

Yes first time in the 'open' era apparently. Maybe we did it before that when professional players were not allowed to complete in Grand Slams, but I can't find any information on it.

Hello Bob in Spain who is in America. I do love the American Open system of automated line calls. So much better than the French version (doing away with Hawkeye altogether and reliant on the human eye) and the English version (we have Hawkeye but you have to appeal at the right time, it's a lottery). For me the Americans have it spot on and the court looks so much less cluttered without all those line judges standing about. What do you think?

Hey Neil _ i think Bob is still in sunny Spain, it was just the turn of phrase he used that maybe suggested he was in the US!

Re Hawkeye - agree totally, lets leave it to the video technology to do its thing !

Yes the Hawkeye game within a game of deciding whether to use one of your challenges if you think the unnecessarily employed human linespeople have not correctly matched what in the background is known from Hawkeye. In truth, it's the stuff of nonsense. Well done, the US Open.
