RE: Weeks 35 & 36 - US Open, Flushing Meadows, New York City (hard)

From the Beeb's text commentary:

Let's hear from a relieved Andy Murray, speaking in his on-court interview:

"It felt like five sets to me. Very tricky conditions, very humid and hot but I was really happy the way I got through that one."

On having coach Ivan Lendl back.

"He's a man of few words - he wasn't saying loads but to have him supporting me was really important at this stage in my career when many people wouldn't. Great to have him back."

On the 10-year anniversary of his maiden Slam win at the US Open:

"It seems like a long time ago and a lot has happened since then in my career. It was a huge moment for me but it does feel like a really long time ago."

On the crowd:

"Amazing support and usually the 11am matches are a little bit quiet but the crowd was brilliant from the beginning to the end. It helps in these conditions and it pushes you a bit further."

Murray copes with cramping

Cerundolo 5-7 3-6 3-6 Murray

Andy Murray has struggled with cramping during matches in his preparations for this this Grand Slam.

He told Amazon Prime he thought both he and Cerundolo were "struggling physically" during that match.

"I thought I did well considering that [the cramping], mentally," he added.

"It's not easy going into a five-set match in those conditions against a guy that makes you move a lot with what's happened recently.

"It's important to give myself a pat on the back with that stuff because it's rare that anyone else does."

Meanwhile Kyle breaks back for 5-5 second set. Hes playing well matching Ruud and in fact Ruud seems to be struggling more with the conditions than Kyle. Good signs for Kyle its a free hit today, his real progress will be in the autumn youd expect.

Interesting, as Kyle is someone who has struggled in the heat and humidity himself in the past.

never heard of Nava and so thought I knew most of the top 200.

Great result for Andy and great sportsmanship from his opponent. From memory I think he was knocked out in the first round last yea so a good chance to improve his ranking and maybe get into seeding for Australia open next year

Yes, watched a little of the Nava match - most amazing pace on his forehand - and, as said, can't help it, DO enjoy a wildcard win smile

Nice to see Andy through in straight sets and goes into his next match as the favourite.

to answer Jons question re French TV showing the US Open:

Dont know - I assume not.  I dont have French TV here - use an old SKY box that allows us to watch UK Channels without a subscription.  Eurosport player seems to be OK for the moment having taken out a subscription for £6.99.  Will cancel before the month is up.

A couple of seeding shocks to wake up to.

Fritz and Tsitsipas both out in R1. Tsitsipas was actually 6-0 5-0 down at one point to a qualifer Daniel Galan (WR94). Eventually Galan won in 4 sets taking the match on his 9th MP.
