A couple of seeding shocks to wake up to.

Fritz and Tsitsipas both out in R1. Tsitsipas was actually 6-0 5-0 down at one point to a qualifer Daniel Galan (WR94). Eventually Galan won in 4 sets taking the match on his 9th MP.

Wow, sounds a rather unusual match!!

As to Fritz, wasnt he up against Tracy Austins son? If Ive understood a tweet from Pam Shriver correctly.

As to JD, I woke up about 4am by which time it was all over so I just watched the last few games on replay but by all accounts he was very impressive and certainly had Rusedski waxing lyrical.

Yes, they interviewed Tracy and she gave some background. Apparently they know each other well, grew up together in SoCal and played a lot in Juniors

Fritz is also the son of is it Kathy May and Brian Teacher, both tour pros, and Austin and May played each other many times back in the day.

to answer Jons question re French TV showing the US Open:

Dont know - I assume not.  I dont have French TV here - use an old SKY box that allows us to watch UK Channels without a subscription.  Eurosport player seems to be OK for the moment having taken out a subscription for £6.99.  Will cancel before the month is up.

In answer to John, French domestic TV doesn't show the US Open in the same way that UK domestic TV doesn't show it

I've always liked Tracy Austin's approach to her son's tennis - I've listened to her quite a lot on it - she's been very adamant that she doesn't want him to get wildcards or whatever based on her name - that he has to make his own way - through college - through the ranks - and not easy for him, I always thought - being an ITF player at over 20 and 'trying to live up' to your mum who'd won a Slam as a young teenager - and this guy got a wildcard into qualis - and has now beaten Fritz !

Excellent from Jack. He did that thing that really good players do, he played the important points well. It was only when they showed the stats at the end of sets and the end of the match, that I realised that he hadn't got that many first serves in but when he needed it, he pulled out a few aces. The commentators were saying that his opponent needs a plan B when plan A isn't working. Whereas Jack had a lot more variety to his game and was moving really well.

So a proud day for several former professional tennis playing mums then - Judy Murray, Tracy Austin and Nicky Draper!

Per my post on the women's thread, I made it to the Open yesterday and watched most of Kyle's match. First set, I thought the level was excellent, actually. Based on his few results since he's come back I didn't expect him to match Ruud but he did and lost it on the big points, but that match sharpness will come.

The only standout element I can remember was that for a good 30 mins his winners came almost entirely from his backhand, which isn't the Kyle we know. So good to see that improvement. Forehand was a little wild at times but it's such a weapon that's to be expected.

Nothing in that match made me question whether he'll make it back to the upper echelons of the game.

Couldn't stick around for Jack but I watched it split-screen style with Serena on ESPN. Wow. Considering that I thought he was outplayed by Emil at Queen's, this was clinical. So impressive and very very exciting. Jack v FAA is the standout round 2 for me. Will be really interesting to see how Jack matches up.
