Emma will be playing Alize Cornet who is playing in her 63rd consecutive Grand Slam singles tournament. This is a record for a woman and not likely to be equaled for sometime if ever. Cornet has played in every Grand Slam starting at the French Open of 2007. It is a testimony to her fitness and her durability that she has managed this feat.
Emma on current form will do well to get past Danielle Collins/Osaka her likely third round opponents. If she only picks up 90 points she will drop to around 75th so a lot of pressure. Not encouraging that she reported wrist pain in her latest practice session but fingers crossed.

Whilst I hope she does well I do wonder if an early exit might not be something of a blessing in disguise. it has been a very difficult year for her with the expectations that come with being US Open champion. I don't think she's been helped by her agent basically creaming it in with sponsorships and endorsements though of course it is hard to turn down all that money. Whilst it has been good for the bank balance it has basically meant she's in the media, one way or another, pretty much non-stop. Then there's been a whole raft of health/injury issues which have been a continuous set back.
if she was ranked say 80-100 she'd be able to enter lower ranked tournaments which, up until now this year at least, have looked more her level. There wouldn't be quite so much press attention and she becomes less of a scalp for her opponents.
She needs a bit of a relaunch and it would be a bit easier out of so much spotlight.
Cornet will be very difficult. her level yesterday would see off Emma in two sets I think. If Emma serves really well she does have a chance but may well have to go 2 plus hours. Let's hope Cornet is a feeling a bit too tired to compete at her best.
According to the Daily Mail, Emma made $21 million last year from endorsements etc.
Truly staggering amount of money.
As well as amazing experiences, dresses, jewels, events, meeting famous people etc....
Some might say this can hardly be called a 'difficult year for her'.
Of course, it could be very canny - make all the money and fame now, let the tennis slump, then work back up from a more rational ranking, which might also feed into some nice comeback stories
I think she'll be just fine whatever happens at this US Open - but I agree, if she loses then no biggie, and maybe a blessing - she's already had an amazing year in a lot of ways

I can't help wondering if it's all or mostly about expectations, she went into the US Open and the matches against Serena and Vika with no expectations and won comfortably. Once she's lost most of her US Open points, she may be in that position again, and be able to work her way up by winning on the tour at her own pace.
This is the end of an era but this is first womens Grand Slam singles which has not featured either Jo or Heather since the 2011 Australian Open. One or other or both featured in the next 45 Grand Slams.

I do wonder how much of that she actually sees given she's still living with her parents. Perhaps they made her put most of it in a trust fund until she's 30?
Any trust fund with one adult beneficiary can be broken/undone at any time so I doubt they did, as it would be a waste of fees etc to set up
They may well have told her to invest it all, obviously, and then it's not so liquid, so - yes - it's not like a big wodge of dosh in your pocket
But she's a clever girl (as we're often told!) - she knows it's there, she knows it's hers, she obviously is getting a lot of the benefits of the endorsements, even if not spending much of the money directly...
