Week 51 - Battle of the Brits

As reported in the Week 51 entries thread, now under way.  First match:

R1:  Daniel Evans (ENG) WR 27 defeated Aidan McHugh (SCO) WR 373 by 4 & 2

The start of the second rubber, Jack Draper (WR 42) vs Andy (WR 49), scheduled for 20.00, has apparently been slightly delayed.

I hate to say it but names draw the crowds - most folks dont give two hoots what the BJK Cup stands for, youve got an event here with Andy, Jack, Evo, might be an exhibition but its got some star quality - add in Scotland v England and its going to draw more people than GB v Kazakstan BJK Cup with players that most punters have never heard of. Brutal but clearly the truth, I am afraid

Oh I agree. This is why most 'international' events like the BJKC should just go to London. You can guarantee there are enough expats from pretty much every country  in the world to make up a crowd, plus tons of general sports fans. The impulse to spread events around is nice, but pointless. (As evidenced by the excellent Copper Box crowd for the exact same Kazak/GB tie a couple of years back).

Definitely a big name factor (part of my point about it would have been nice if Emma had gone, just to cheer, and even if not the whole week)

And London factor

And the football has finished now

And it's nearly Xmas, people ready for an 'event'

And , Definitely,  Scotland v England is juicy

And maybe Jamie Murray is better at marketing than the lta?

And - cant hide the question - maybe men's tennis is more popular?

Andy plays Dan this afternoon, while Paul Jubb takes on Aidan this evening.  Good experience for Paul.

The doubles get under way at 13.00, when Jamie Murray & Jonny O play Joe & Neal.  Then the Murray brothers face off against Joe & Neal in the last match of the day, after Paul vs Aidan.

The format is following Laver Cup - this afternoons singles and doubles both worth 2 points and this evenings 3. So 12 points in the match in total, its 1 all currently. 7 needed to win.

And Jack doesn't get to play at all today., does he need a rest?  Why are there 5 in England team and only 4 in Scottish team?

Cos its just an exhibition at the End of the day so they can manage the format however works best! I suspect Jack could only commit one day hence he played yesterday and Paul is in the squad instead.

According to the Beeb, Joe has pulled out due to illness, so Evo gets a doubles outing after all!

Singles this afternoon, doubles this evening - same as Andy.

Also it's Jack's 21st birthday today, so perhaps he has plans....

Happy Birthday Jack!!
