And Bautista Agut is the last seeded player in the bottom quarter. There's a great opportunity for someone. Fingers crossed its Andy.
Wow, yes I hadn't realised that Fritz, Zverev etc had exited from the section above which will now produce a quarter finalist from (WC) Popyrin, Shelton, Wolf and (LL) Mhoh.

Shelton(Florida where his dad is the coach), Wolf (Ohio State), and Brooksby (Baylor), along with Cam (TCU) all went through the college tennis system, although I believe Brooksbys time was short. Great advert for the student athlete pathway and with Mhoh, things are looking bright for American tennis.. Disappointed Cam just lost - come on Andy
Very disappointing. He apparently had treatment on his left knee early in the fnal set, but says that that didn't affect the outcome of the match, according to the Beeb.
For me it was a mistake to play Auckland (although we know why he did).
Had some great matches at United Cup, didn't need any more a week before GS.
I agree - most serious contenders avoid the week before slams (Dan has now taken this view) and Cam also had the middle east exhibs in December as well, so was certainly match fit.
He may have a clause or emotional reason to play NZ, being born there, but maybe he should have missed the United Cup if that was the case? The United Cup is hardly a "big" deal in terms of representing your country, however much fun it turned out to be
Stu Fraser's report on the match, almost a blow-by-blow account of the key points in the match, ending with the $64,000 question:
[...] how on earth does he recover for the third round against Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut on Saturday?
Includes a photo of Kokkinakis, presumably with the racket he mashed up in the third (?) set & those ghastly shorts he was wearing, not to mention those hideous tattoos on his left thigh which I hadn't noticed before.
Andy's thoughts on the scheduling of his match in another Fraser article, which also refers to the issue with the quality of the balls.

Apparently ice baths and compression sleeves on his legs and focusing on recovery rather than hitting any more balls. Amazing how robust his bionic hip is and Andys team certainly have their work cut out - would love him to win the tournament, especially as I voted for 24 wins at the AO
