Week 5 - ATP Challenger 75 - Tenerife II, Spain (hard)

One 'reasonable' UE

One really daft UE

One UE somewhere in between

One good serve

One dodgy drop shot, which wasn't a bad idea - even dodgy - as Ryan's not good at the net

And one good point from Ryan

And it's back to 5-5

Who's coaching jay Clarke at the moment? He stands so far back, doesn't seem to have any weight on the forehand side or decent topspin, it's just a mid paced rallying shot.

And I'm a big fan of ryan, but these unforced errors are awful. Not a match for the purists.

And you just knew it......

Jay ended up losing the tie-break, despite being 3-1 up, and Ryan cramping/tweaking his knee at a short shot

Raindelay, I agree - but it's always been the way - he's always stood SO far back, and hit a rounded trajectory - you'd have thought he had a good game for clay, as he's a fit guy. But not really

Like you, I'd love to see if he could ever hit a flat shot, step in and take the ball early - he's a strong man - it's got to be worth trying....

Really feel for him, though - he had so many chances to close this out - and Ryan wasn't playing that well....

Desperately close in the end.

On the other hand, I very well battled and negotiated tight first set by Dan Cox - showing that the older contingent still have it

It was a question of who'd blink first - and it was Mager, in the tie-break - they turned at 3-3 and with some nice attack, Dan 'destabalised' Mager, who then committed a couple of horrid (and unusualy) UEs and lost 4 points on the trot

Always been a fan of Dan Cox. Doesn't have the weapons but at least will leave it all out there on court, which at the end of the day is all you can ask for.

Yes, I've got a lot of time for him too.

I find him a little 'prickly' as a character when I've been near him at events

But I don't hold that against him - prickly is fine, probably better than clown - and it's not been easy

He was a 'great young hope' when he was 14, say, with Les Petits As and all that

And then basically stopped growing at 5ft6 (or 5ft7on a good day)

Which must have been very hard - it's terribly tough in tennis if you're way below average height (and in life, for some, too)

And he's had his mental health issues, and come back from that, and - as you say - is a real grafter

And a mega bravo to Dan !

Lost 6 games on the trot in the second set (not playing too badly but....)

And then really took the third set by the scruff of the neck, and won it 6-2, with Mager well out of puff

It feels like our challenger level players - Ryan, Jay, Liam, Paul, Jan, and then Ali, Billy, Stuart P at the edge have all hit a ceiling the past few months and topped out or fallen. Wimbledon and the grass seemed an exciting time with several of them performing well, whether the reality of the grind of the tour has taken them back or there are other reasons , it feels like we need a spark or two to take some of them forwards again.

Im hoping Liam will do something in Koblenz this week, Ryan didnt inspire against Jay though and Ive not seen anything from most of the others to be positive about, possibly Jan excepting.

Summer grass seems a long time ago now!

Just tuned into Ryans match as he used a review. First time Ive seen Hawkeye being used below the main tour.
