L16: Tommy Paul & Ben Shelton (USA/USA) CR 359 (146+213) defeated (2) Rajeev Ram (USA) & Joe Salisbury CR 7 (3+4) by 3 & 4
Are we coming to the parting of these particular two ways, I wonder...
Certainly looks that way, but hope not.
They didn't look happy, hardly said a word to each other watched after middle of 1st set when they had just lost their service game on a deciding point.
i said around the Aus open that I thought they should split, and that I think Pavic/ Mektic Cabal/Farah have run their course too. I would now add Arevalo/Rojer to the list. I just think it can become stale after a few years. Unless you are still rising the rankings .... like Lloyd/Harri, but when you aren't having much success and you've been around the same person for 2/3 years i think it's good to look for a change and see if that spurs you on.
I think there is a lot in that and, yes, it does feel stale. Joe is still 30, a young doubles player and has at least 6-10 years left in his career, lots of time for another pairing to develop; Rajeev is 39 and I suspect this is his last big hurrah. I wonder if that is behind this - off form, Joe musing about new pastures, Rajeev clearly wouldnt want that at this stage in his career, tension bubbles. Timing of course is everything - do you leave it season end, Ram can maybe retire if they can get their form back and do something in the rest of the season. Or do you change it ahead of the grass, rock the boat or bring some inspiration to the table.
Only they know if it is temporary or something deeper - I understood they are good friends and, if that is the case, hopefully they can talk it through and get through it or at least remain as good friends.
They played IW last week in the semis and Neal and Wes won 10-5 in the MTB. Closely matched. An RU and QF from the two Sunshine Swing events, 6-2 win loss record for the two events is still decent. Rumours of their demise are fake news!!
Disappointing end to the MTB; they were 7-4 up at one point. Lloyd hit an overhead long at 9-10, and Lammons (who is an incredible server btw) made no mistakes...
Must be frustrating for them both to have not made a breakthrough to the top tier of these events, but they should reflect on the fact that this time last year they were still a month away from losing in a Challenger QF for the last time. They have very little to defend until the Rome Masters, so hopefully can make some headway now.
QF: Nathaniel Lammons & Jackson Withrow (USA/USA) CR 83 (41+42) defeated (5) Lloyd Glasspool & Harri Heliövaara (FIN) CR 25 (13+12) by 7-6(3) 3-6 [11-9]
No! 5 points to nil?! Thats ridiculous .
Well, 7 points to 2 from Lammons & Withrow being *4-7 ( 1 mini break down ) to winning the MTB 11-9 with a biggest run of 3 points. They won their final 5 service points and 2 out of 4 return points which while very disappointing for Lloyd & Harri, just based on these points scores is not ridiculous. Not that I even think 5-0 would have been, depending on how the points played out.
Pity.
