Weeks 27 & 28 - The Championships, Wimbledon (grass) - main draw

Last 16

Got to fancy Sinner and Shapo to get through to the last 8; Djokovic v Hurkacz could be 4 sets but Djokovic should win. Bublik to beat Rublev in 4 or 5 for me.

Nicolás Jarry is giving Carlos Alcaraz a thorough examination of his grass court credentials on centre court and has taken the second set on a tie break. Jarry has a formidable serve. I don't recall seeing the guy play before although he is the 25th seed. Great match, very competitive.

Tsitsipas v Eubanks on Monday - like the sound of that!

With Alcaraz and Medvedev through also, the top half looks very interesting . Shame no Brits

At least those who beat our men didn't bow out in the next round....

The 3rd set was brilliant from Alcaraz. Jarry still playing amazing tennis but he also dipped a little in the middle of the set and that's enough for Carlos to take it 6-3.

Jarry fires back immediately, breaking the Alcaraz serve at the first opportunity. 6 deuces follow (2 unconverted break points) as CA battles to break back in the next game. It was that sort of match. John McEnroe - always the best commentator - accuses Jarry of 'trying to change the course of history'. The return break doesn't come until the 8th game. McEnroe is assuming like me that Carlos is going to be in the final for a rematch with Djokovich, I suppose. Another break point comes at 5 all, CA takes it and suddenly Carlos is serving for the match.

Nicolás Jarry threw everything he had at Carlos Alvaraz today but CA came through.

Very good tennis match, just about on par in time per set with Andy's 4 hour 45 minutes five sets match vs Tsitsipas.

Hopefully Alcaraz can just keeping getting more confident in his surroundings on behalf of "Anyone but Djokovic".or whoever else emerges from a still pretty stacked top half. I expect Novak to reach the final from the bottom half.

Wow, that doesn't sound like the best of risk vs reward strategies from the outset.

Tbh indiana I do think Alcaraz will make the final against Djokovich but I don't think he'll win it. I hope I'm wrong it's one of those head ruling the heart things, Carlos still has stuff to learn but he's a fast learner and I hope this may be the last time that Novak beats him. His time is coming for sure, maybe not just yet.

Meanwhile it's looking like a mild upset is on the cards as a motivated 21st seed Grigor Dimitrov comprehensively outplays 10th seed Francis Tiafoe to take the first 2 sets. Dimitrov played some inspired tennis to be on the brink of putting America's top seed out when rain stopped play (again).

First arguable upset of the tournament:  Seb Korda (22) beaten in four sets by Jiri Vesely.

Followed by Liam dumping out Ruud in five & Laslo Djere Ben Shelton (32) in four.

And now Matteo Berrettini's despatched Alex de Miñaur (15) in straight sets (3, 4 & 4).  Pleased to see him coming back from injury (& Covid).

And Berrettini does for Zverev (19) in straight sets (6-3 7-6(4) 7-6(5)).  biggrin
