L64: (WC) Liam Broady WR 142 vs (4) Casper Ruud (NOR) WR 4 (CH = 2 last September)
L128: (WC) Jan Choinski WR 164 (= CH) defeated Dusan Lojovic (SRB) WR 56 by 5-7 7-6(4) 6-2 6-2
And now, of course, the great British, non-tennis-following, public will start asking: who the hell's Jan Choinski?!!

Some will go further - he will be told hes not a real Brit by many casual xenophobic commenters
Well, he may or may not be a 'true' Brit (depending on your definition) but he obviously is not someone whom the LTA or the British tennis system can claim as one of theirs and show him off as an example of our success.
Personally, I think well done, Jan. He played for Germany until the age of 22 (although his dad is Polish and his mum British). It may not be right but what I read was that the German federation supported him as a youngster and then he was dropped at the age of 21 when they thin down the numbers and ony keep the absolute top ones (or the ones favoured to be top ones). And so Jan thought, if the Germans aren't going to support me, it would be better to move to GB where at least they have a Grand Slam and are short of players and I'm more likely to get wildcards, some favourable treatment etc etc. And he's A1 spot on. You have to treat your tennis career as a professional. It was a very smart move.

I agree and I am a fan of Jan. Just being clear, I am not expressing my views here, I have already seen this view expressed in HYS style threads in 2 papers, sadly

Jan has an English mother and a Polish father.
I know - Im just saying what others will say, not people here, the daily mail reader types .
According to the Daily Mail, its readers skew 54% female to 46% male. Some 83% are said to be homeowners and 69% own their homes outright. Some 63% are ABC1 (upper and middle class) and some 366,000 are said to have savings of more £100,000.
Surely the question British or not (for those bothered) could apply to a number of players? Johanna Konta, Greg Rusedski, Cam Norrie, Virginia Wade left Britain for S Africa when she was one
Watched the end of Jans match, the look on his face said it all

The point raised is a tired and well trodden path I guess. Lets add in Colin Dowdeswell, Monique Javer, and even the likes of Emma R get it.
i think daily mail readers can stand me having a go at them then !
But, as per your other post about Boris Becker, Jon, at least I know you respect the Daily Mail readers' views about true-Britness and that is one of the wondrous things about our nation

If you read Andrew Jarretts recent autobiography the import whose presence caused the most problems was Monique Javer. This was not with the public but within the other British players. The atmosphere sounded terrible at the 1992 Fed Cup week. Akthough her mother was born in Britain I don't think Monique ever lived in this country. Later on she seemed to be involved in coaching in America. I think she was coaching Ceci Bellis at some stage.
Bad light stops play, to use a cricketing term, in Dan's match, with him trailing by 2-6 3-6. He really doesn't look interested.
Think thats a bit harsh. I think he is interested. Dan being classic Dan though and having a go at anything/anyone to try and get it going, which has always been the case in his career when things havent been going his way. Halys to me seems to have come into it without having played any of the warm up tournaments so is probably the one not interested and having a free hit and it is paying off. Hopefully a break in the play till tomorrow can help Dan.
There seems to be a lot of inverted snobbery in this thread? Why would the greater British public know who Jan Choinski is? You cannot seriously expect them to know of the lads career to date anymore than you would know of another sportsman making his first appearance at this sort of level?

The fact that Jan hasnt really generated that much attention on here never mind with the greater public further makes your point. I agree with you on this one.
Was really good to watch him yesterday hes earned his way back the last year another great addition to the ranks given the lack of breakthrough bar Jack Draper in the last 5 years. Wouldnt be at all surprised to see him move ahead of Liam and ingot the Top 100 by the end of the year.
