Yes, GB women's singles #1 ,( not playing women's doubles ) gets mixed doubles WC to play with world men's singles #17 shocker.
I think looked at like that it's just not. So while yes many would agree it would be if based on certain other factors, there seem to me to be enough perfectly legitimate factors.
The other thing is that mixed doubles is fun even for those people who aren't avid tennis fans. I still remember watching Henri and Heather and Jay and Harriet and loving every minute of it without the tension I get from watching singles matches. Daria and Luke Saville got a wildcard for a GS as well because they are a couple. I think it's a very benign way of getting a bit of extra publicity for tennis among those who have more of a passing interest in the sport. And there aren't the huge financial pay offs that you have in the more serious forms of the game, so it's not massively depriving others. Also if anyone deserves a bit of luck it's Katie. I wouldn't begrudge her a wildcard at all.
Slightly surprised to see Jonny O'Mara pair up with Olivia rather than Lissey this time. Their win against Jamie Murray and Venus Williams was my favourite match of the tournament last year.

Julian's returns were not great and he made a few errors at the start of the MTB which put them at a disadvantage (who takes the serve from the woman and tries a tricky lob of the tall male player as opposed to just hitting it hard back at the woman who will probably give you an easy shot back, if it comes back at all?)
And Lissey's DF at 7-7 right at the end was really unfortunate
But it was a decent match and they did seem to be having fun
L32: (WC) Katie Boulter & Alex de Miņaur (AUS) UNR (0+158) defeated Storm Hunter & John Peers (AUS/AUS) CR 191 (162+29) by 2 & 4
Storm Hunter actually ranked No. 7 in doubles. So a very good win, particularly after the lively debate about the merits of Boulter and De Minaur getting a wild card.
