Week 29 - ATP 250 - Infosys Hall of Fame Open - Newport, RI, USA (grass)

Michelsen into last 8 here and live ranking 165. Expect a US Open wild card for this lad. Top 100 by end of year. Started year down around 600.

Liam well beaten by Thompson in two sets. Grass over and out for Liam

I hope Liam isn't injured again.  Remember he had quite a long layoff before the grass court season.  OI forget what the problem was but his coach wrote about it i  seem to remember.  I watched a bit of his match and he certainly wasn't the player he was at Wimbledon sadly.

I see he's pulled out of Atlanta, so something must be amiss.

Liam has a wrist issue with bone growth similar to the problems Emma had been having.  In his case he opted not to get surgery as at this point in his career as he feels he can manage it and does not want a long layoff and the inevitable slide down the rankings that would bring.

I would not think he is injured right now, that defeat is not exactly surprising given the relative strength of his opponent on grass and Liam probably just did not get going.  I am optimistic that he is just giving himself the benefit of a week off before transitioning to the hard courts, he is entered in quite a few events over the next few weeks and he quite probably ought to have skipped this event with hindsight but then he probably had not expected to spend as much time on court as he did at Wimbledon.

Liam probably thought this was a weaker field for an ATP event rather than a stacked Atlanta so although it didnt work out I think he had probably done the right thing. Gets a weeks rest and practice now before Washington qualies.

And he beats Mackenzie Macdonald in two sets and into semis. Up to 153 live now.

Mannarino won the final and stopped Michelson. AM beat AM.

Mannarino ended with a grass record of 12-4 , 75 percent with a win here and a final in Mallorca.

He might not win the big ones, but on grass hes proven hes one of the consistently strong grass players, indeed I make him a top 10 grass player this season.

One thing Mannarino is not is necessarily consistent on grass on a match to match basis. Sometimes he just goes missing and is very beatable. Though I agree over the long term he probably consistently picks up very decent grass court points
