Week 32 - WTA1000 - Montreal, Canada Hard

Some quite interesting chat on Tennisforum (surprisingly!) that Marina hasnt played an ITF all year. As a result shes perhaps lost out on a certain level of points that may have come more easily, so could be a bit underranked compared to others around her who usually have a bit more balance.

Its also encouraging that she doesnt have any big points off until next year except portroz. So if she can manage to get a few wins at some bigger events - shell get back in the top 100 and be more experienced for the 2024 events. Shes made a huge positive jump, disappointing loss but still great that shes getting more exposure at this level.

Yes, looking good for later in the year if she can get further good results.

Re ranking points earned this year, Katie B is live #54 on 761 points and Jodie live #78 on 591 points.

The current official WR 100 based on the last 12 months is on 719 points. So Katie at the start of August is already pretty much guaranteed to end the year in the top 100 and Jodie doesn't have that much to find. FWIW the official WR 50 is on 1070 points.

All of the qualifier spots are against non seeds which could make it a big opportunity for some points if Katie can get through.

So far all the seeds have won their R2 qualifier so she would be one of the favourites of a LL spot if she wasn't successful today.

That's exciting. It's all about them keeping fit so they can get some momentum over several tournaments. Could be an interesting run up to the end of the season.

a player ranked at 140 - nothing more than what we should expect? I would like to see KB beat top 100 to 50 players now to consolidate her ranking. I do like her game, but Im not sure if she is about at her level now , I cant see her making the top 50 but I hope she proves me wrong.

Still good stuff. Luckily, for interest sake, in the world of pro tennis it is far from a given that a 70 odd rank player easily beats a 140 odd rank player, whether involving a Brit or not.

Re Katie's level and top 50 prospects I would in general tend to agree, though actually, as per above, she's currently running just outside the top 50 for points won this year, even with very few real scalps ( a lot less than Jodie this year ) so she might yet by hook or crook, at least temporarily, sneak into the top 50 by the year end.

So true - I got really interested in the netball world cup this week - but despite being interesting there were very few results against rankings, and none by more than a place or two ie big upsets. The rugby world cup will be the same, the rugby league was very much the same. Golf is too much the other way - impossible to predict and no real consistency, so the top of the world rankings change regularly and the top 50 is stuffed with almost unknown names

i don't disagree but you've also got to consider players like Sherif and Rus are now top 50 players. With some smart scheduling and a few decent runs, anything is possible on the WTA!

Katie plays again today (or early tomorrow morning) against Rebecca Marino. If she wins she gets Coco in the next round!!

Good chance for Katie then to solidify her ranking.

Despite not many top 100 wins this year Katie has had plenty in the past including top 10 wins so Im not too bothered.
