Week 32 - ATP Masters 1000 - National Bank Open - Toronto, ON, Canada (hard)

Very disappointing for Dan evans after a good week but not surprised I think last week was a bit of a fluke.

Totally different view on that - I dont think it was a fluke at all, you dont fluke a whole week! What often happens in tennis, more often than not, with so many good players around it is hard to come off the back of an emotional high one day, Sunday evening late in fact, fly over to Canada, and then play a match on the Tuesday and win against a big hitter of the talent of Diallo. Most winners one week dont do well the following week, we very seldom see back to back good tournies in this sport, there are too many good players out there.

I do think however that Dan may struggle to have as many highs as he has lows going forwards, not as a fluke but as he is a confidence player. Let's see how Cinci and NYC go, but either way I still dont see Washington as a fluke, I am afraid.

I wasn't the least surprised to see Dan lose a tight match against a big hitter after last weeks efforts - and agree with JonH's comments.

I wasn't surprised to see Cam lose to Alex either - Alex has had plenty of good results this year and is on the up, whilst Cam is struggling for wins.

Think the break might do him good.

Agreed - and the draw favours Andy, so I hope to see him win one or two matches here

Bit of a points drop for Dan, but I was just checking Liam's ranking and noticed that last year's Toronto champ, Pablo Carreno Busta, has dropped a full 100 places - from 24 to 124 - in the live rankings after missing this year's tourney. Ooooof!

Pretty sure PCB has been injured and hasn't played in months. Without any points gained to replace the ones he's losing, of course he is going to drop significantly in the rankings.

Of course, I get that.  It was more the drop from WR 24 to 124 in a single week I was commenting on.  Can't be many players that's happened to, injured or not.

FAA (10) or Max Purcell (Q) in the last 32.

L32:  (Q) Max Purcell (AUS) WR 78 (CH = 62 in June) vs Andy Murray WR 40

The Aussie beat FAA by 4 & 4.

Andy beat Purcell in 3 sets on grass in Newport last season ( I had forgotten Andy played Newport post Wimbledon in 22). TA rates Andy as a comfortable favourite. Let's see - beating FAA was well done but FAA seems all over the place currently and in no form at all, so not too difficult right now to achieve that!

The silver lining to Evos early exit is we will no longer have a stream of breathless posters speculating whether he will imminently take out the top 20, seemingly willingly forgetting his defence of 360 ranking points this week.

Last week I thought it would be practically impossible based on current form that he would keep his US Open seeding - i'll take this loss :)

So a SF in Cinci will cover that. Go, Dan

I imagine some celebrating went on after his title win, deservedly and understandably, but probably took it's toll, plus more loss of sleep, and well, i'm not surprised he lost.

In tennis it is a really good idea to lose five or six in a row then win five or six in a row rather than win alternate matches. Looks bad for "streaks", but gets one much deeper in tournaments.
