week 33 - WTA125 - Stanford, USA Hard

Great news to wake up to.

Looks like Jodies found her mojo again this week.

Excellent chance now in the QF but will the pressure get to her ?

Come on Jodie.

By my maths, Jodie has beaten 8 top 100 players this year alone! Yes, she's patchy but that's a pretty good showing for someone of her ranking. And they aren't all only on grass (although a majority are).

Looking at her matches history in the WTA website, I make it 8 wins and 4 losses against top 100 players this year before her now 2 wins this week.

So now 10/4 overall. 6/3 on grass, 4/0 on hard, 0/1 on clay.

She will now be back into the top 100 herself on Monday. Currently live ranked 96.

I decided to go on and look at Jodie's record against players ranked 101 to 200. That is 6/11 overall. 1/2 on grass, 3/8 on hard, 2/1 on clay.

So overall 16/15 against top 200 players.7/5 on grass, 7/8 on hard, 2/2 on clay. So she wins about as much as she loses against top 200 players, just a bit odd top 100 vs 101 to 200 split.

Although to be fair she has only lost one match this year to a player outside the top 200, that being to Lily, then WR 209, at Surbiton. She is overall 9/1 against players ranked outside the top 200, giving her a total 25/16 W/L record this year.

Also to provide a further bit of context five of those losses to players outside the top 100 were GB players, three of them in the 100-200 bracket. Also two of them were players that were quite underranked at the time and are now in the top 100: Caty McNally and Claura Tauson (and also Katie Boulter who also comes in the GB category obviously). I can imagine it's harder to play against your own countrywomen because they know your game better and from a psychological perspective. Can't draw any particular conclusion from it but just a bit more info.

A shame that five of the eight quarter-finalists in this event come from nations hostile to the Commonwealth. Indeed, there is guaranteed to be at least one finalist from such a nation, owing to the bottom half of the draw.

Jodie has recently played several of the other players in the QF and only has a negative record against Bai. Jody beat the only remaining seed in 3 close sets in Eastbourne earlier this year.

I think he is alluding to a bottom half with two Russians and two Chinese and a Chinese in the top half ie 5 from countries which are enemies?!

QF: BURRAGE, Jodie (GBR) 101 lost to UCHIJIMA, Moyuka (JPN) 191 4-6 6-4 4-6

Very close match, the main difference being Jodie's opponent being better at taking break points.
