Week 34 - US Open men's qualifying - New York (hard)

Gutted for Liam :( If only he had some decent weapons!
Still think he'll crack the top 100 this year! Fingers crossed for a LL spot

If anyone deserves one it's Liam.

Yes I dont see there being any lucky loser spaces unless someone pulls up. The US Open in the main slam if you ask any tennis player, essentially the pinnacle, more players will pull out of the French and Wimbledon in comparison.

If Liam is going to break the Bogdanovic curse he will have to head to Mallorca and win that challenger. Which I somehow doubt.

Well, it may or may not be the main slam, but there have been two LL spots in the women's

Gutted from Liam. So close and yet so far. Needs to keep his head up as he has a clear target to aim for over the next few months.

Has Liam pulled out because:

a) He has played a lot recently and fancies a week off

b) The delays in qualifying make it impossible to get there in time

c) He thinks he might get a LL spot and is hanging around

He's also currently down for Cassis and Rennes in the following two weeks, so maybe a week off is a reasonable plan.

I disagree that all tennis players view the US Open as the pinnacle of the Slams. I suspect if you did a survey, Wimbledon would come out on top, but it is also comes at the end of a brutal schedule that takes in the clay court season and Roland Garros, with a quick turnaround onto grass that might explain the additional withdrawals.

I don't think any player is more likely to pull out of one Slam than another - they're either fit to play or not - but it's perhaps easier to rest up before the US Open. If you notice, there were a crazy number of withdrawals at Cincinnati, which gave players nursing injuries time to recover.

I think we maybe have a sample of Jaggy here rather than of the players.

I actually would expect at the margins, if it cane to a difficult decision, a few more players would pull out of the clay and grass slams purely down to the surface quite apart from the fair point about the schedule. And personally I prefer the tennis of the US Open to Wimbledon.

But as I said ...

Turns out there was a LL spot, but Duckworth got it.

That was my thought too.  Alternatively you could argue that there are more LL spots at the other slams because players are so desperate to play that they leave it until the last possible moment before withdrawing.
