Week 46 - Nitto ATP Finals - Turin, Italy (indoor hard) (Doubles)

Match tie break. Just one break each so far. Could go either way still.

Neal and Wes have won 45-43 points overall; Joe and Rajeev have saved 5 of 6 break points. On a knife edge.

For once we have none of the mathematical calculations needed in the doubles here. Its all worked out so there are two known semifinalists and 2 straight knockout matches left.

Semis will be :

Joe and Rajeev versus Dodig/Krajicek or Gonzalez/ ERV

Granollers/Zeballos versus Neal/Wesley or Bopanna/Ebden

With the USA, we are the only country with 2 players left in with a chance of the title .

Medvedev beat Zverev tonight. Result means that all semis spots are still up for grabs, with 3 players in with a shout from each group - Sinner, Rune and Djokovic; Medvedev, Alcaraz and Zverev.

Rublev and Tsitsipas head home and Hurkacz cant progress from his one match.

BBC Sports on TV just now carried literally a 20 second clip of the end of Joe and Neal's match, shaking hands and some narrative around Joe and Rajeev being 2 wins now and into the semis. Wow!

That win was enough to take Medvedev through, regardless of the last round of matches. But whether he finishes first or second is still to be decided.

Harri was an option! See post above - in his blog he says he tried to get Neal, Neal asked to think about it; Harri also met Louis cayer over dinner to discuss it. But after two weeks Neal decided to go with Gonzalez

How interesting. Thanks for sharing. Of course there are lots are factors that go into selecting a doubles pairing: who likes to play on which side, looking for opposite strengths, complementary personalities. Would love to hear players talk more about it, although suspect they need to keep cards close to their chests.

Yeah, just realised that - he seems to be on form!

The mens event seems so much more intense and interesting than the WTA Finals the other week - is that just me?

No comparison in terms of competitiveness. And crowds!

 biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

No, it's not just you

Simon has an awful lot to answer for, IMO.

(Carayol wrote a pretty scathing article before the event even kicked off,  (https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/oct/30/finals-venue-chaos-is-symbolic-of-the-wtas-failings) - the articles post the event have been even worse)
