The mens event seems so much more intense and interesting than the WTA Finals the other week - is that just me?
No, it's not just you
Simon has an awful lot to answer for, IMO.
(Carayol wrote a pretty scathing article before the event even kicked off, (https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/oct/30/finals-venue-chaos-is-symbolic-of-the-wtas-failings) - the articles post the event have been even worse)
It was a debacle, for sure, the WTA event. The ATP have toyed with this event being outside - Houston one year when Fed and Roddick played, one or two other occasions in the past. But it has worked best when 3 things come together:
1) Indoor arena - you get the crowd noise and intensity, focus around one court etc - this event just fits as an indoor event, that is its heritage
2) Long term venue - not forever, but the event has worked best when it gets a home - Madison Square Garden for a long time (the WCT Finals in Dallas also), London O2 of course, ATP was also in Frankfurt for a number of years as well - those venues worked well; move it around but not every year - the WTA sadly has been moving it around year in year out and not getting a heritage built hope. It has become an afterthought for them
3) Local players - less able to influence but having one player who is the local interest like Andy was for years, Sinner now (and other Italians). WTA in Mexico, Saudi, China etc doesnt get that local aspect at all. It is important.
For once we have none of the mathematical calculations needed in the doubles here. Its all worked out so there are two known semifinalists and 2 straight knockout matches left.
Semis will be :
Joe and Rajeev versus Dodig/Krajicek or Gonzalez/ ERV
Granollers/Zeballos versus Neal/Wesley or Bopanna/Ebden
With the USA, we are the only country with 2 players left in with a chance of the title .
Gonzalez and ERV won an epic MTB 15-13 against Dodig and Krajicek and so the top seeds are out: GB is only country with 2 players left in contention.
Semis will be :
Joe and Rajeev versus Gonzalez/ ERV
Granollers/Zeballos versus Neal/Wesley or Bopanna/Ebden
It also means that both Wes and Neal could potentially take top spot in Race now, if they get through their final group match and semi; and Wes could go back to number one and Neal number 2 this week (they are on the same points but Wesley has a countback advantage).
Both Neal and Joe have lots on the line this week, therefore.
