How do the points work towards rankings, Lambda? Eg you say Charlie got points at the weekend, how many points did he get for that and what broadly is the points structure? Or is it all UTR and totally based on their UTR number? In college play only or their UTR number from all play?

Basically, how does it work!!biggrin

In the women's rankings, Sofia moves up 1 to No 6. This surprised me as I expect her to fall down the rankings as the season progresses because she will not play many of the topped ranked players again until the season end and so cannot add significant points to her ranking score but can have points deducted for losses. In fact, this coming weekend when ODU play NC State is the only chance I can see for her to get a ranking win before the NCAAs in May. Besides Sofia there isn't much else to note as we only have 4 of our (at least) 90 women in the top 125. I expect Gabia to fall out of the rankings eventually for the same reason as Sofia, and Imogen is also going to have few chances to play ranked opponents, although more chances than Gabia or Sofia have.

6. (7) Sofia Johnson (ODU) 13-4
44. (37) Grace Piper (USC) 8-8
59. (57) Imogen Haddad (USC) 12-7
97. (55) Gabia Paskauskas (NC State) 12-6

In doubles we have 8 ranked teams, of which 3 are in the top 30.
Top 30
4. (3) Dudeney (+ Gailis) (Florida) 8-1
8. (7) Piper (+ Fairclough) (USC) 11-4
18 (26) Hutchings (+Berlanga) (Tulsa) 13-1

There are no team rankings this week due to the National Indoor Championships.

Its a complicated mathematical algorithm based on the highest quality wins and all losses. Essentially the higher ranked your opponent that your beat the more weight to your ranking score, but limited to a certain number of wins that count. Probably best to read the ITA explainer https://wearecollegetennis.com/ita-rankings/rankings-explained/

Another weekend of tasty match-ups. The highlight of the weekend is undoubtedly TCU travelling to Texas for the first time these 2 rivals have met since the NCAA final in May with play starting at 11.30pm tonight. This would have been a 1 v 2 ranking match-up if Texas had not lost last weekend. Texas is a very different team from last year, returning very few players, but for the last 2 years TCU and Texas have met 4 times with it being 2-2 in both years, with of course TCU winning the most important one to take the NCAA title. Texas have won the last 2 matches in Austin. Although Texas is no longer in the same conference as TCU, they have arranged a reverse fixture for next month in the middle of conference season.
Based on recent line-ups, the singles match-ups are likely to be #18 JPJ v #11 Timo Legout at 1, #6 Vives v #10 Gorzny at 2 and #9 Lui v #121 Pierre-Yves Bailly at 3

#2 Wake Forest go on the road to play Ivy League #6 Columbia. Columbia have the No 1 men's player (Michael Zheng), but that should not concern Charlie or Luca. Hopefully Luca's 0-2 weekend last week was a blip from illness or a niggle and he can get back to winning ways this week.

#9 San Diego host #12 Oklahoma. San Diego should win at home. #2 Ollie is likely to play #81 Oscar Lacides

The focus on the women's side will be on the National Indoors.

Virginia open with the early match at 3pm (our time) this afternoon against Tennessee. Virginia's men's and women's teams were missing several players last weekend through illness so we'll see whether Isabelle retains her place in the line-up. Virginia will be favourites for that match.

We can also have an interest in co-hosts Northwestern with Claire Pollard as their long time British head coach, and who Marelie Raath will be joining next year. Unfortunately, they play top seeds Georgia and they are a very long way from being a top programme they once were. They are using their 2 years as National Indoors host as a recruiting incentive to get the players to move back up the rankings.

Away from the National Indoors, the women's match I'm most interested in is ODU making the 200 mile drive to Raleigh to play NC State tomorrow in a match that was arranged long before NC State failed to qualify for the National Indoors. I'll be interested to see how #6 Sofia Johnson gets along against Michaela Laki, if as I expect Laki returns to the line up after being missing last week. The last time Sofia played on the Number 1 indoor court in Raleigh she lost to Millie 2-6 5-7 last May. This is the toughest match on ODU's schedule for the regular season and I'd expect NC State to win comfortably, but hopefully not on the top court. ODU had a successful practice session last night winning 6-1 against William & Mary. Sofia extending her unbeaten run this semester, winning 1 & 1.

Isabelle seems to be Virginia's No 5 singles as that is where she has been on the initial submitted match sheet for the last few matches but today was playing at No 3 singles after Virginia withdrew their No 2 and 3 singles players moving everyone up 2 spots. The sickness bug must still be affecting them. Despite everyone except their No 1 playing 2 spots up Virginia got a 4-2 win over Tennessee with Isabelle on 3, and courts 5 and 6 getting the singles wins, showing their strength in depth. Isabelle won in 3 sets, 6-3 3-6 6-1. In the next round tomorrow, Virginia will play either UNC (probably) or Pepperdine with that match next up.

TCU were resoundly beaten by Texas 4-1 in front of a packed crowd. Even though it was 26C outside, this was held indoors in preparation for next week's National Indoor Championships. The doubles was tightly contested with all 3 courts simultaneously tied at 5-5. Lui and Pedro went on to win 7-5 to give TCU the first doubles to finish. TCU had match points on the other 2 courts, but ultimately lost them both in 7-3 tie-breaks to put Texas 1-0 up.

Texas were clear winners in singles winning 1st sets on 3 of the 5 matches giving them a pathway to victory. PJ and Lui both lost in straight sets.
TCU and Texas are in separate sites for the National Indoors so cannot meet until the final.
TCU will look to rebound against Florida back home on Sunday.

Texas (3) d. TCU (1) 4-1
Lui Maxed/Pedro Vives (2) [TCU] d. Timo Legout/Lucas Brown (5) [Texas] 7-5
Sebastian Gorzny/Pierre-Yves Bailly [Texas] d. Jack Pinnington Jones/Cooper Woestendick [TCU] 7-6(3)

1: Timo Legout (11) [Texas] d. Jack Pinnington Jones (18) [TCU] 6-1 6-1
3: Pierre-Yves Bailly (121) [Texas] d. Lui Maxted (9) [TCU] 6-3 6-3

A superb victory for Isabelle Lacy over #20 Carson Tanguilig, playing at 3 again today for Virginia against UNC in the quarter-finals of the National Indoors. She's 1st to finish singles with the other singles all early in their 2nd set, but Virginia is going to have to take at least 1 to a 3rd set to progress to the semis.

3: Isabelle Lacy [UVA] d. Carson Tanguilig (20) [UNC] 6-2 6-3

It seems an age ago since Isabelle finished. Her win was an important contribution as Virginia pull off the great escape saving multiple match points on the 2 deciding courts when 2-3 down to defeat UNC 4-3 and progress to the semis against Auburn or Georgia.
Thrilled for Isa on her individual win.

TCU made hard work of defeating Florida with 3 of the first 5 singles in play going to 3 sets and JPJ giving up a break and needing a tie-break to close out his match. TCU did rest Vives in singles, moving Lui along with everyone below him up 1. There is no rankings update for the men this week, but if there were I would think Wake Forest would move to be the No 1 ranked team. TCU would probably go down to 3 or 4. It'll be interesting to see if they or Ohio State are the top seeded team in their site at the National Indoors this weekend.

TCU (1) d. Florida 4-0
1. #18 Jack Pinnington (TCU) def. Adhithya Ganesan (UF): 6-3, 7-6 (2)
2. #9 Lui Maxted (TCU) def. #54 Jeremy Jin (UF): 6-2, 4-6, 6-4
4. Cooper Woestendick (TCU) def. Henry Jefferson (UF): 6-0, 6-2

Ohio State (4) d. Baylor 4-1
3. #106 Will Jansen (OSU) def. Luc Koenig (BU) 6-3, 6-2

There were no matches of note on the women's side with the various Florida teams playing low level Div 1 teams, although Alicia Dudeney was missing for Florida as they again only had 5 available players from their 8 strong roster.

Where did the women's indoor team champs end up landing, Lambda?

It is the men's this next weekend, is that right? And we should have a fair few Brits playing?

The ease by which JPJ was thrashed in one of the recent matches over the past few days was a surprise to me, did that surprise anyone in the know? He lost 1 and 1, if I recall, against Legout.

I don't follow college tennis much at all but, for whatever reasons, JPJ has seemed rather inconsistent on tour, good wins mixed in with unexpected losses.

It's still ongoing. Semis today, Final tomorrow. Yesterday was a rest day so the semi-finalists from the secondary site could make the 3 hour drive to the primary site.
The men's starts Friday.

On the JPJ loss, the comments I have heard is that TCU were shell-shocked after doubles where they had match points when they were up a break in both doubles that they went on to lose in a tie-break. They went into singles deflated from that.

At the Indoor Nationals, Isabelle was the only bright spot in a flat Virginia team as top seeds Georgia were dominant in doubles and the other 5 singles matches. Virginia were probably feeling the effects of two long and emotionally exhausting matches in the previous 2 rounds. Isabelle has certainly impressed this weekend and should have made a claim to move up the order for the remaining indoor matches (if there are any). They have this coming weekend off before starting conference play with a couple of matches the following weekend.

Georgia (1) d. Virginia (5) 4-0
3. Isabelle Lacy (UVA) vs Mell Reasco (UGA) 7-6(5) *2-1 unf
