My only excuse is that my laptop keeps cutting out on me, literally going dead, without warning, at the moment, often in the middle of a post. It can take me a while to get back to where I was & I either have to reconstitute the lot or I manage to rescue what I'd been typing, but not quite, don't notice that I haven't fully restored the post & put it up with bits missing! Same thing happened with the Kuwait thread-starter.
My work laptop does that occasionally- help desk told me to let the battery drain and then charge again. Beats the original turn it off and on again! Worked for me, maybe wont solve your issue but worth a try?
disclaimer - if your laptop breaks completely its not my fault

Would that it were that straightforward. Thanks for the suggestion, EP, but I think the problem relates to the fact that, although the device is always plugged in (I never take it anywhere), the bloody battery no longer charges at all! I took it to one of the many shops at the top of my road which claim to offer a repair service, but it proved to be only a temporary fix & after about six months, the problem reappeared. Bunch of cowboys!
Whenever I log on these days, I get a message on screen saying that the power source isn't recognised, even though the lead I was using was the one supplied by the manufacturer (Dell) with the device. I even bought a genuine replacement from Dell, but that didn't resolve the issue, either. Apart from cutting out when I'm using it, it also does so if I put it down for whatever reason & pick it up again afterwards. I'd try taking it to be repaired again, if I could but find a trustworthy firm.
Im no expert. But if it isnt charging it is either a) the battery b) the power pack/cable.
Im not sure if getting a new battery is an option or , as a cheaper first option, you could buy a new power pack or cable for your model and try that - if it isnt charging at all.
Failing that a new laptop might be the answer?
By the way, Im sure I read that leaving a laptop constantly charging or connected to power doesnt do it any good, the battery that is. I might have an old wives tail there, though.

As noted in my second paragraph, I've already tried replacing the power cable/adapter & it hasn't had the desired effect. I assume that it's something to do with the battery, but I need a reliable "techie" to confirm it or diagnose the actual problem & I don't know where to find one!

Ok, just read that again! I guess go online and read the reviews for techies and see if any specialise in Dell. London is a big place so not sure if Any are local but it feels like googling and instinct !
I'm no expert, but:
You have an issue with your battery, although the PSU makes this irrelevant
The machine keeps cutting out, so you either have a loose cable or an intermittent issue on the motherboard.
This is SO not my area but, SC, my mother-in-law went into her local Dixons (which may be Currys now) and asked the men in the computer area if any of them did IT home help.
And she got talking to one, who was very nice, and helpful, and he ended up going to her house - and ended up being her IT homehelp for the next 4 years until her death.
She liked it because she got to talk to him first and decided whether she liked him or not
And he was a good fit because, tbh, he was in sales in Currys and therefore used to dealing with exasperating people who knew absoltuely nothing about IT !
He also did a pretty good job, didn't try and sell her stuff, charged a normal rate - all good.
Just putting it out there.....

Thanks, CD (& everyone else who's offered advice/suggestions). I like the idea of a visit to Currys/Dixons, but the (very) small branch of Currys we used to have at the top of the road is long gone. I think I'm going to have spend some time on Google to see whether there are any computer repair people locally who appear trustworthy on the basis of published reviews. I certainly need someone who doesn't throw up his (or her) hands in horror at the extent of my ignorance of IT!
The only answer I can offer is to turn everything off for 20 minutes and try again - sometimes this works on old PCs/Laptops - but doesn't cost anything - good luck
I'm about to replace my laptop which is 10+ years old - because it won't allow many new versions of browsers
How old is the laptop and how much money have you spent repairing it so far? At some point there comes time when a new (or new to you) laptop will be a beyter option than the repairs and fixes.
Do you have a library near by. They often run computer classes so it might be worth asking if they do and if so the contact details for the person who runs them.
