SPOTY 2024

Was a much better show than last year. It helps having an Olympics to look back on but Mary Earps winning for basically saving a penalty was a joke.

Was very good to see Sir Mark Cavendish so acknowledged with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

What a cycling lifetime, certainly not without its tribulations before taking the most Tour de France stage wins record in his final season and bowing out last month winning his final race.

I didnt see any of SPOTY this year - didnt it historically always be a Sunday evening? - as Im working away this week. Maybe me not checking in, but it felt a bit low key to me and I didnt feel that inspired across the board - which seems strange as a) Im a broad and avid sports fan b) Olympic year and I always love the Olympics

Next year maybe!

Yes, it was traditionally a huge Sunday night event

Much of the issue is surely that the BBC doesn't actually broadcast much of the top sporting action ( or even have rights to show it? ) which has diluted what was once almost as much a 'Look At What Another Great Year of Great BBC Sport We Have Brought You' show as anything else.

And to be fair, it very often was a great show.

I saw odd bits of it & have no problems with the win for Keely Hodgkinson (though I do think she could have chosen a more elegant dress!), but was bitterly disappointed that Alex Yee didn't get the runner-up slot.

Yeah, agreed - I would have liked Alex to get a more prominent position.

I see he is targeting the London Marathon next year, dont know whether he will step back a little from triathlon whilst he prioritises his running in the lead up to that; hope he doesnt go back to running totally, he is too talented a triathlete and his rivarly with Hayden Wilde is one that can continue to develop, they have had some real battles.

With triathlon, the BBC dont help with the commentating on it - some of the worst commentators across all sports!

Plus the different categories (from sprint, through Olympic, through the longer distance levels such as Ironman etc), and genres such as SuperTri (or whatever it is called now) can confuse a little when one follows the sport at a relative distance, as I do.

Suspect Rory McIlroy in with a big shout of the 2025 version of this! Well done Rory and big sympathy to Justin Rose - imagine if we had Jack D versus Dan Evans in the Wimbledon final - we could only dream!

You'd think so. Although Rory hasn't got the SPOTY vote many have expected in the past, particularly I recall the year when he won back to back majors.

I had bets on 5 players for the Masters from the get-go.

Was on Rory at 13/2 to win. Cashed out and took a profit when he was leading after R3 and was then about evens.

And Justin was one of my 4 each way bets and my longest at 60/1. Made profit on him too for a place but would have been a biggie if he had won ( plus I would have thought myself rather smart to cash out on Rory ).

Overall a nice wee profit. But so nearly a rather big profit, relative to the limited amount I ever bet.

Was certainly an exciting, fluctuating evening. Thanks for the entertainment, guys!
