Week 1 - WTA250 - Auckland, New Zealand

Pity. Not really surprised at the loss but a disappointing scoreline.

I am optimistic though of a pretty good year coming for Jodie and at least back into the top 100. Indeed I have seen WR 80 being suggested

That's a shame for Jodie, but as Priesty says, VJK was undoubtedly a lot tougher opponent than she looked on paper and not the sort of player you want to run into if you're having a bit of an off day.

Twice Vivian dfs to give Jodie a bp then saves it with a super forehand, then a horrible forehand error from Jodie, followed by another error as Vivian holds *0-1

Jodie holds after a df and an ace. Windy conditions

A good forehand crosscourt winner from Jodie and 3 gifts from Vivian, the last a df for the break *2-1

Horrible forehand error from Jodie on easy shot after big serve, then Vivian wins a point with a volley for 15-30 but Jodie responds with good serve to set up a forehand winner then an unreturned and finally Vivian forehand error wide 3-1*

Love hold For VY, one good rally ending with Vivian volley winner *3-2

Routine hold for Jodie, her drop shot clipped the net for a winner on the last shot 4-2*

Brilliant passing shot winner from Jodie but even better b cc winner from Vivian after Jodie's aggressive shot put her under pressure, two Burrage forehand errors to end the game *4-3

Jodie recovers from 15-30 with good serving, two unreturned and one that set up a volley winner 5-3*

Deep return causes Vivian to go long, Vivian is unable to cope with Jodie's short low blocked return 0-30, VY b error 0-40, good play from Vivian wide serve sets up f winner 15-40, lovely lob winner from Jodie to take the set 6-3

---

3 Burrage dfs to go bp down but saves it with a forehand winner after a decent serve, then an unreturned 1st saves another bp after a poor b error, finally a good T and an ace out wide to hold 1-0*

Super f dtl winner from Jodie after aggressive return, then a df for 15-30 but poor JB drop shot into net as VY holds to 30 1-1

Better drop shot after bounce smash from Jodie as she holds to 15 despite just one 1st serve 2-1*

Two expansive forehands wide from Vivian and a df to hand Jodie a bp chance, which she takes with a good b return off a 2nd 3-1*

Jodie f just wide after a 1st 0-15, Vivian f pass winner 0-30, VY agg f 0-40, unret 2nd 15-40, VY f error long 30-40, JB b error net after rally for the break back, JB shots not deep enough 3-2*

Rubbish game from Jodie 3-3

Jodie benefits from a net cord that contributes to a VY error, another f error from VY attempting an aggressive shot 30-0, lovely drop shot winner from Jodie 40-0, df 40-15, big f winner from Vivian 40-30, unreturned 1st (just lands wide) 4-3*

Twice VY b error long 0-30, Burrage b cc winner 0-40, careless JB error net  15-40, decent 2nd T serve unreturned 30-40 , excellent wide 1st unreturned 40-40 , df 40-A, df for the break *5-3

JB b error long 0-15, awful b error after 2nd 0-30, super return from Vivian off a 1st 0-40, Jodie gets away with a poor drop shot as Vivian presents her with the chance for a f pass winner 15-40, good wide serve creates opening for b winner 30-40, unreturned (just) 1st 40-40, df 40-A, good wide 1st 40-40, VY b error A-, VY wins rally 40-40, unreturned 1st A-, Jodie wins the match with a subtle forehand near the net 6-3

--

Wasn't that much between the players despite the huge difference in ranking. First set very windy. Less so in the 2nd. Jodie's weapons haven't been obvious in her last 2 matches; just the occasional big serve that sometimes sets up additional aggressive shots. Not clear to me what Jodie's game is right now; she mixes it up but hasn't found her touch on any shot. Execution on aggressive shots has been awful, while her rally ball typically lands either alarmingly short or carelessly beyond the baseline. From memory, I only watched one Burrage match in the 2024 season, though I did watch a huge number of her matches in 2023.

She needs to perform a lot better than this.

Very disappointing that Emma had to pull out with an injury. Glad Jodie got the LL spot and won, if not easily. It sounds like the wind played some part (and a big thanks to kundalini for the detailed report) but that Jodie is alao a bit rusty again and needs to play herself back into match form.

Shame that Emma has to withdraw.

Glad that Jodie got in and got a win.

Looks as though she only had 90 minutes notice so that could be a factor!!!

Bit off topic, but Sonays just asked Jodie if she would like to play doubles with her in 2025. Would be a good team for the BJK potentially.

Jodies doubles, when she plays, seems pretty impressive. Sonay has no doubles activity since October 2022 and a CH of WR 559 so who knows the potential.

Wonder what's the motivation here for Sonay. She doesn't exactly overplay in singles and seems to play a more limited focussed amount. I guess she must feel that it could help her overall.
